Wanted: RHD 300GD with Factory Aircon

Greetings,

I live in London and am keen to purhase a 300GD. I own a 300D and absolutely love the sound of the OM617 motor. (Yes, its slower than molases but I prefer reliability over speed!)

I realize it's harder to find aircon on these models but I have seen it equipped and am looking for a rust free example. Please email me if you know of one for sale.

Many thanks!

Thanks for surfacing. I'll definitely check it out but usually these older aircon systems were simple enough to fix the smaller issues...meaning that its probably a compressor that needs replacing/ rebuilding.

Well you can get a compressor for around £200 as a factory remanufactured unit from Denso, the OEM. That will be a lot cheaper than trying to retrofit a whole system into another vehicle.. The OM602 is also 5-cylinders, like the OM617 and is its direct descendent.

Re: Wanted: RHD 300GD with Factory Aircon

I too love the OM617, which some have labeled as a cockroach engine - almost impossible to kill. However, If you are looking for OM617, then you are thinking W460.

I think it will be almost impossible to find one of these with air-con. Some did indeed exist, but the UK probably got very few and it would be the 280GE that would have been the most likely candidate for a/c.

It can however, be retrofitted with the appropriate kit (Diavia ?) and even the factory-fitted version was never that well integrated, compared to the W463 version.

I think if you find a rust-free example then you are doing well. That should be top priority. I think you also need to find an Auto transmission version, as the auto goes so well with the characteristics of the OM617. If on top of that you also find one with air-con, that will be a miracle. I don't think that air-con is actually essential for the UK.

The OM603 in the W643 may be another option to consider. The engine has some improvements over the OM617, including a better fuel injection system, and with 6-cylinders is also more refined. Maybe not quite as bullet-proof, but almost.
(Those fitted to the W463 don't have the cylinder head issues of earlier versions fitted to the regular cars.)

Good luck in your search.

Excellent advice Arnie! Would a W463 be more likely to come equipped with factory air? If so, I'm happy to cast a wider net!

Re: Wanted: RHD 300GD with Factory Aircon

Well, that is an easier proposition, but not by much. Those manufactured in 1995 and 1996 came to the UK with air-con, unless spec'ed otherwise by the customer. I don't know the figures, but I'm guessing  that's probably some 20 vehicles all together. Otherwise, try to find a Japanese import. Typically, they are RHD and  will have zero rust due to their climate and again, due to their climate will have air-con. Issue is here that most of those will be petrol versions.

Would it be easier to get a 280 with air con, then swap to 617 power?

Does anyone have a 460 diesel with factory air con? If so how good is it.?

My 2nd g-wagen was a ge280 with an after market air con fitted but it didn't work so I took it out, didn't like the truck much either so I sold it on quite quickly, I can't recall ever seeing a factory aircon on a RHD w460.

Thinking laterally, the one place where you'll be likely to get one is Malaysia
