I have read somewhere that someone with this engine changed the dieselpump and gained 20hp!
Unfortunatly it was in an ad for his G wich is now removed, so I can no longer ask him Crying or Very sad
Is there anyone who heard about this? Where can I find more info?
This would really be worth it I think!!!
thx,
G

Now that I driven it for a couple of thousand miles....
-I am getting used to the slow but determined nature of the truck...
-It uses too little diesel....13 liters/100km
well, it still uses a lot, but it uses less than the MB manual says. That has not happened to any car I own, so I suspect that they adjusted the pump to a poor mixture in order to pass emissions there.

Next time if you have to pass an emissions test just put some good old cooking oil into the tank. It will be lower than a brand new Saab.

The Finnish lot can do this.. but it cost £1000 at least;

= Mynä-Diesel (+358600393131)
Mynädiesel
Järvenkalliontie 9
23100 MYNÄMÄKI
P.02/4307180

Go and search under diesels on www.pointedthree.com e.g.
www.pointedthree.com/d...rch#M51841

My notes on this say <<Diesel engines are factory tuned based on a "smoke limit", because a diesel running at full power/ stoichiometric fuel/air ratios smokes. Depending on the setup the diffrence between the smoke limit and full power is somewhere between 10 and 20% usually

83 Mercedes 300D 3.0L 5cyl, all stock with increased transmission pressure and Myna modified pump .0-60 in 10sec, 1/4mile 16.6@85 145rwhp/209 ft-lbs torque It is stock everything but the injection pump and tuning>> not sure where that is from!

Read this lot; www.exploroz.com/Forum.../26564.asp
.. which is applicable to all tuning.. i.e you want an EGT (exhaust gas temperature) gauge and then tweak timing and volume settings to get more power while monitoring temperatures and smoke.

A turbo tunes well but a n/a engine will struggle to make the 20% more power you are talking about TBH .. and you would more easily make this extra power by adding an aftermarket turbo kit which is still available... or find a 617a turbo diesel version of this engine as fitted to 300TD estates .. but all these are £1000 options.. but I guess you should be able to up the fuel delivery to run more smoke and get the power..

thx,
I have heard a lot about the minadiesel...
gonna give them a call.
btw, mine is a 6 cylinder 603 not a 5 cylinder 617
if this engine accepted a turbo there would be one on it now!
there are 603 turbo's but they have whole different block internals to cope with extra heat.
The reason i opted for the 603 is no electronics and supposed reliability.
so I want just a slight power increase w/o compromising reliability.
If any modification causes the engine to wear prematurely or get more fragile I don't want it.
but a 10% power increase (113-124hp) by simply adjusting/adapting the fuel pump would be ultranice...

I'm afraid there is "no such thing as a free lunch". You want more power you will reduce the life of the parts; guess the question is how much. With an old 617 they are proven 500k mile engines.. so if adding an aftermarket turbo will maybe make it a 350k mile engine.. but at my rate of miles (3k miles/year) I suspect oil will run out first for me!

The issue would be getting a cast exhaust manifold that put the turbo in the right place relative to everything else.. and how the local emissions police regard this conversion. Fuelling increase is just same as other mechanical injection pumps with aftermarket turbo.. not nice but it does give a little lift of horses.. of course you really want to intercool it to make it right.. and add a turbo injection pump.. and after all that it could be tuned to be a reliable engine. But never expect any modified engine to be as reliable as a factory tested one. Crying or Very sad
