A History of the G-Wagen

Published in issues 21 through 23 (December 2000 to June 2001), of GWIZZ, the GWOA's newsletter

Despite the fact that Steyr-Puch has a long history as builder of very capable off-roaders like the Haflinger and Pinzgauer, which in fact did not heir the beauty of the Austrian horse breeds after which they were named, the truth is that the G-Wagen is a true Mercedes, since this company was very much responsible for its conception, although this was done in co-operation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch.

G Wizz December 2009

AGM 2009 News
You should find the minutes of the AGM included with this newsletter. If, for some reason, they are missing, please contact the chairman at the address listed in the committee members list, and they will be sent out to you.

The AGM was well attended on both days. Saturday’s greenlane expedition was so well populated that the group had to split into two for the afternoon. Things were a little dry which made the trips a little less taxing than they might have been, but a good time was had by all. Tony’s road trip brought in some very scenic routes. On one occasion the road disappeared as we drove along it, turning into a very lumpy track. Again, those who took part in the trip enjoyed themselves despite very high winds....

The 2008 AGM at Chirk Castle

The 2008 AGM at Chirk Castle was a great success. I would like to thank Richard Wells, our Welsh representative for all the hard work he put in to make the event memorable. To go to the extent of arranging sunshine and a steam engine timed to our arrival at the coffee stop is above and beyond the call of duty. Could I also thank all those members who turned up for one or both of those days. It is always a pleasure to put a faces to voices on the telephone or e-mail correspondents. Could I also thank those committee members and directors who have served the club in the past for their efforts, and welcome the new members of the team. Good luck to you all.

The full minutes will be published with the December newsletter, and also posted on the members section of the website in due course.

"web surf-out"

I would like to sincerely applogise to all members for my poor or non-service. Some of you may have noticed that I have been below the radar line past few months and that it was sudden dissaperence.

Dispite having access to a computer a few months after the last annual general meeting, that unit, had caused problems in so far as the supplier exchanging the unit. This took a few weeks to sort out.

My next problem has been and still is an issue with my previous internet server. In essence, my problem has been that I have not enjoyed trouble-free service from this server. Despite the number of phone calls, time and effort spent in trying to sort out my problem with the server they have not been able to resolve my issue. Even after my patients ran out with them, I was given a lot of grief trying to cancell the service and migrate to another server!

Any how, I am up and signed to another server and hope I can be service to you all. It will take me a few weeks to catch up with those of you I had left stranded. I am sorry to say that I may not be able to address all whom, who contacted me due to the fact that some a contact information will have been lost with my previous server. Please address your queries again, I will try and answer you in return.

I have heard some say that they have not heard of problems with my ex-server, however, based on my experience, I would suggest any subscribers to steer clear of Tiscali; this is my PERSONAL opinion.

I hope can redeem myself in time to come, hence, the club.

I am sorry to you all.

My new email address is: anarake@aol.com.

Facelift for Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Latest generation of the classic cross-count

Stuttgart, Feb 15, 2007
Mercedes-Benz has refined its G-Class yet again. The interior has been injected with fresh appeal courtesy of a new, high-grade instrument cluster, an attractively styled steering wheel which is also new, as well as a modified centre console with redesigned switches plus a new-look control unit for the air conditioning. Outside, the latest generation of the G-Class can be identified by the design of its tail light units with their sophisticated LED look. These facelift measures see Mercedes-Benz hold true to its philosophy of making sure that this classic vehicle - which has been in production for over quarter of a century now - is equipped with a comfortable, up-to-date interior on a par with the best saloons, along with state-of-the-art technology. By so doing, it preserves the exclusive status of the G-Class as a full-blooded cross-country vehicle blended with the very finest lifestyle qualities.
The first Mercedes-Benz G-Class unveiled in 1979 was designed predominantly with tough off-road terrain in mind. Over the many years of its production, Mercedes engineers have adapted the G-Class to changing customer requirements. It boasted outstanding off-road capabilities right from the outset, but its all-terrain prowess has been continuously improved on by the addition of the latest electronics. Its exceptional performance off the beaten track, excellent towing abilities and balanced handling characteristics combined with its saloon-like ambience have resulted in the G-Class enjoying an extraordinarily long production career, which now extends to 28 years.

2007 Mercedes G320 CDI First Impressions

Long live the Dinosaurs

Lake Placid, New York - There it was: a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a G 320 CDI no less. This was the Mercedes product that I though I would never have the opportunity to drive. Let me tell you that I was first in line on the morning of the test drives to make sure that I was going to get the chance to put it through its paces. This thing, to put it nicely, has been around basically unchanged since 1979. Usually, this is automotive suicide. In the case of the Geländewagen, it could never be any other way. Consider the G-Class the German Hummer and for a Hummer enthusiast, nothing should ever be changed. Same goes for a G lover.

Mercedes G-class 'timeless'

SUBSTANTIALLY UNCHANGED: A 2006 G-class 270 CDI.

Stuttgart, Germany - Buying a new car inevitably means that after a few years it will look old, especially if the maker has replaced it with a newer model.

A Mercedes-Benz G-Class off-roader, however, is one way of avoiding this trap; it hasn't changed its basic box-shape substantially from the first model introduced 27
years ago.

Germany technical testing authority Dekra however warns that you need to watch certain points if you intend buying a used Mercedes G-Class.
