I may have told this story before.  But in about 1996, when our 230GW SWB was just 9 years old, it needed both boxes in the exhaust.

MB wanted some astronomical figure.  I happened to be on a work trip in the USA (Dallas) and I asked a MB dealer there and they quoted me about 1/3 of the price at about £500.  The catch?  They had to order it from Germany.

No problem I said, I was coming back the next month so I ordered it, paid for it and when it arrived I wrapped the two in brown paper.  I checked one and carried the other on a strap travelling American Airlines.  Not sure how it got through the luggage scanner.

On arrival in the UK, I presented them to customs and duly paid some import tax (hint, 'some').

Fitted myself and all good.

30 years later!!!  I need the full exhaust, again.  This time with the flexi downpipe from the manifold.  Its coming in at £1,600.

Can anyone source it for half that, or a 2nd hand one.  The manifold needs a new gasket so I could replace that too.

What would a simple Stainless system cost?

Answers on a postcard. Or just reply.

Stainless circa £750 or so depending on who you have close by...

Deffo do the Manifold Gaskets it makes a huge difference

Do you have the part numbers that you have been quoted?

A few different 230 systems out there...

If not I will work it out and look

One part of me says we should think ourselves lucky that a near 40 year old truck had parts availble still from the manufacturer

The other part wishes there was a larger aftermarket "classic" parts option

I guess the aftermarket like Britpart for LR leaves a lot to be desired!

And also if there was enough volume for aftermarket suppliers the trucks would not be so rare and maybe equally not so desirable to many because of it...?

Anyway I ramble as usual...

Have determined that the after market Exhaust options are not too bad, but the manifold is the thing so looking for a 2nd hand one.

I think mine is the one with the exhaust pressure pipe to it.

I found a manifold for £350, but its not the same.

Going to check with my garage what they have in mind.  Don't want them buying the wrong one and then I get to pick up the tab for getting it corrected!

Get the number off the manifold... that will be the easiest search option

Mine was OK when the gaskets were done but I had checked and that type is available new at a semi reasonable cost

But it has two seperate front pipe as it is CAT model

Stec do all the 230GE stuff especailly the CAT type as the same as the Swiss 230's

Just that stock NON CAT manifold they dont have! Typical!
