Fingers crossed I'll be a new G owner come the weekend. I'm so excited, as I've been wanting one for years. Can anyone recommend essential/starter mods on both the engine, interior/exterior... May as well start building my wish list now! Any links to purchase will be greatly appreciated. Wary that such a topic could get out of control quickly, so let's add some boundaries.... I'm not looking to mutate it into an AMG/Barabus monster, if that were the case I'd save up for another 5 years and get one.. Nor am I looking to pull down trees with a petrol powered winch.. Or have enough for lights to light a football pitch.. I'm looking to do some light off roading (eventually, I'm a V-reg at the moment) and would love to join you peeps on a trek one day.. (was reading the Wales trip coming up, I think that's too early for me) In terms of mods, just modest stuff that will improve the performance/efficiency curve, looks (I soo badly want to add headlamp grills, 20"inch wheels (with plenty of rubber, not the low profile rubber band style) and chrome piping on the side trims, (standard on AMGs) and I'm not massively into wide body kits or bull bars. Internal lighting kits is ok (it'll still be under warranty for another year, so I don't want to be pulling out the command control unit just yet), roof spoiler is ok (just about I think, undecided atm) slimline roof rack is functional too.. How could I forget the rear bench seats, where do I get them from (and who can fit them? I live in London) Aim is to retain its classy-ness, with a sprinkle of personalisation.. So not too much chrome that it looks chintzy.. If you know what I mean. If you have any of these on your G, pictures would be cool too! Thanks in advance for your help, my new extended family to be.. (will introduce myself formally once I'm a bona-fide owner) :) :)

Shufly,

Well best of luck on the impending arrival. Nothing wrong in tarting up the G! Though some points to consider for off roading;

Perhaps two sets of wheels? one for road - your 20"'s? and one for off roading , say 18". Any 'additions' may lead to an expensive replacement, repair should you get ' over enthusiastic' while off roading, and believe you me this can happen! Bench seats are a must, as you can then qualify for congestion charge exemption, though being a diesel not too sure about the LEZ. However I would check on if you can/cannot have them fitted to anything post 2006/7 ( I have repeatedly asked VOSA and DVLA and am being battered back and forth on that one!)

Though why would you think a trip is 'too early', its never to early for a G and new driver! laugh I am sure the other members would look after you. You may want to take a gander at the galleries section, first off to see some of the members, second to see what and where they take their G's and thrid to get an idea of some 'optional extras' you can put on your new 'bad boy'.

the Brush Guard (MB speak for bull bar) is always a personal choice. Initially I wanted mine off, but kept it on, gald I did, as it has prevented many a mishap!, though you may not be able to get a solid metal one as the rules changed, again around the 2006/7 mark where front bars like this were a no-no. Well I suppose there are very few Kangaroos and cattle sharing the roads in England! LOL

Looking forward to the pics and a very happy new member!

welcome !

Bear in mind than anything which makes it taller (spoiler taller wheels etc) will reduce your choice of car parks even further.

Hi shufly, congratuations, you did not loose any time, I assume you went for the grey one;  if you do the figures you will notice that all OEM tyre configurations have a similar circumference (whether AMG or 16inch wheels); changing wheels/ tyres beyond OEM circumference is possible but not straight-forward:  http://www.gwoa.co.uk/content/summer-tyres;  also have in mind that a larger tyre might reduce axle articulation/ touch the bodywork when going off-road.

Actually, the above post reminds me that on the new G's (post 2002 - ish) with 4ETS and ESP, you cannot change wheel rolling diameter without upsetting the operation of these electronic systems. It is possible only through re-programming the transmission control unit and the instrument cluster with the new wheel circumference, but it is a specialist job. If not re-programmed, the 4ETS will reduce engine power when you don't expect it too, making driving difficult and possibly dangerous. There is information out there on other (US) forums about all of this.

Unfortunately the new G's are somewhat less easily customisable than the old ones.

Re: 2013 G350 Bluetech - Mods, Modification, Mutation, ...
Thank you for all your input and steer.. Yes I'm going for the grey one, just waiting on the log book to be sent to the trader so I can do the deal.. Spider, I am thinking of 2 sets of wheels 20 inch amg wheels for the road (I've always loved 5 spoke rims) Adrian, when I get bored of the 18inch stock ones I'll go for the Hutchisons, they are pretty cool... I'm definitely interested in getting the bench seats put in.. Do I really have to tell DVLA? living in London, and working during the week, I'll hardly ever drive during the congestion timings, roads are chaos and parking is even worse, usually we leave those types of journeys (shopping) on Sundays where roads are generally clear and parking is available on a single yellow.. I've seen rock sliders, and under chassis protection bits, let's see how far I get with off roading before making any commitments.. I'm pretty certain that there'll be a drop out or two re Wales, as with all intent in the world, life gets in the way of G-fun.k.. I need to do some baby courses first, I don't even know how to put it in to low range yet..(i think it's just a button on these newer ones?) I feel like a kid at Christmas, I missed out on 2 w463s before, 3rd time lucky?! Theo/Arnie, thanks for heads up on car parks, thought had crossed my mind, but I don't how tall stock Gs stand.. You left me behind when talking about the 4ETS..having changed the wheels on my current soon to be gone xc90 I know the recommended max is 5% above or below the manufacturers suggested circumference.. Ideally one wouldn't want to go above 3%, hence why I'd opt for 20" with the side walls being 50 (as opposed to 45). Just wondering would I need to worry about power issues as 20inch wheels are not designed for a G350 Bluetech.. As always, thanks for all your help and advice. S

Ps. Where can I get decent floor mats for it.. The pictures of the mats on pistons heads do look badly worn.. I'm after a luxury thick pile and a separate rubber set.. Cheers!

For mats, you will find them on ebay.de as LHD versions, that can probably be made to fit, or your local MB dealer should stock fitted rubber mats for RHD

The standard G-Wagen height is about 2.0 m, which limits the choice of multi-storey car-parks and at places like Gatwick airport, you need to find the outdoor, high-vehicle car-park.

As for wheels/ tyres if you stick to a size not more than about 3% different to the 18" standard combination that is currently fitted, you should be all right.. But wait until you've driven it a while before changing wheels and tyres. I went from 18" down to 16" for a more comfortable ride. Live axles give a lot of unsprung mass, which relies on the tyre-wall for a little compliance. The G was designed as an off-roader and personally, I think it looks better as one, not with rubber band tyres, which defy its purpose.
