Considering a 606 or 617 swap for my 230ge.

Doing the sums to see if I can justify the conversion, obviously I know much the donor is but you don't see the 230ge engines advertised often so thought I'd ask on here, what is a 70k miles really smooth/strong running 230ge engine+ancillaries worth?

Thanks

Re: 230ge engine worth

Depends on how badly someone wants/needs it. Not a great market for them, I would think, so may need to advertise for a long time, until the right buyer comes along. My guess, for what its worth, is around £500.

Here, for £545 you have a whole W123 car complete with claimed low-mileage 230 engine: ebay item 231490907897.

What's wrong with the 230 ?? I love mine ... every day and wouldn't get rid of it. I think it is an under rated engine and hardly appreciated !

Yes, not quite sure of what would be the expected benefit of swapping it to an OM617, with less power, albeit nice engine that the 617 is.

I could perhaps see that a 280GE might be too thirsty, but a 230GE ?

Re: 230ge engine worth

I'm with Fred on this - a well maintained and sorted 230ge is a joy to drive. Only a little slower than a 280ge but less thirsty and faster than a 300gd but only a bit more thirsty.

Don't spoil that G, the value of that car will be better if left unmolested and original

Re: 230ge engine worth

After reading the replies, going to give the 230 engine a go and a few months lifeline at least, should be out the paintshop this week so will see how we go on at the weekend.

Thanks for the honest replies!

If I was to purchase another 460, I would go for the 230. Great engine.

You've convinced me boys!

Anyone in the know able to source the check cloth? Black/grey interior out of a 1988 car?

Re: 230ge engine worth

Just my penny's worth. The nicest G I have ever owned was a '89 230GE with some special engine in it. Bill Moss was highly impressed with the fact that a "civvy" car had that engine. Apparently it was meant for behind enemy lines or something.

Here is another option for you. I you want more power, fit a CLK 230 engine, or source a 190 230 multi valve engine. I have done the CLK conversion, and it went like something smelly off a shovel. You will have to have the electronics made up, which was easy, and the rest is a straight swop.

Option no. 2 would be to keep it standard and just slow down a bit, you'll get there and a 230 has the pretties purring sound out there.
