Re: 230ge w460 timing chain cover

I recently had to haven ew head gasket and someone who knows highly recommended using new MB bolts - so I did (even though they are mega expensive).

Mine is a different engine (300 petrol) so different rules might apply.

I think that is standard good practice for head bolts.  having to remove sheared ones is just too painful and the stress on the old bolts isnt worth the risk.

I assume you used just a bit more wriggling and force to free the timing cover?

I had my 230 head skimmed about 15 years back and its been fine ever since.

Too big a job for me to think about doing myself but made sure garage that did the work replaced bolts with new MB ones.

And then after I had the job done my sister told me she'd once changed the head gasket on a car she owned years ago - made me feel mega wimpish!

Yeah new head bolts from MB - they're stretch bolts so have to change them really.

Got the timing chain guide out of the head - just two long pins you have to screw in a m8 boilt and pull quite easy.

Had to take the valves out to get the head skimmed so put new valve stem oil seals.

I just go to MB for everything now just so it's right. Still find it strange the oil pick up in the sump has two bolts on to the timing chain cover makes the job way bigger.

Re: 230ge w460 timing chain cover

Thanks Nick.

Well that's it done. All back together and running.

Only one thing is the exhaust manifold is leaking! So in to get skimmed today:)

She is running so so sweet now - what a difference. I have also deleted the egr valve as it was not the best. Just made plates for blanks - easy job

At one point I listed her for sale on car and classic but just couldn't sell her as just a fantastic pleasure to drive (sore face with smilling so much)

The only thing I hope to do now is replace the rear wiper motor as it's not working. If anyone has one please get in touch.

Thanks for reading my journey  so far:)

Hello, Tony. You seem to have made a similar journey to us in many ways. Our China Blue 460 was VERY reluctantly up for sale. Friends were horrified. However, after a few tyre kicking nibbles, my lovely Hilary put her foot down with a firm hand and said to pamper it up a little and keep it. Thus it is that SKZ 4130 is currently at BS48 4AA getting some spa treatment. As for sorting the rear wiper motor on yours... After what you have already achieved that will be a mere bagatelle for you. All the best, Nick.

Brilliant.  I hadn't spotted that Nick.  I actually sold mine(sorry, ours), then bought it back for my daughter.  Did 100miles in 'him' yesterday - all good.  (I am working on pronouns!)

Add a separate thread under Classified Ads if you have engine and other parts.  It'll get missed here.
