Hi everyone!
Just wondering if anyone had information on the 350 diesel? I know it is universally cursed by most, but what actually is the problem with them? Is it just one thing or is it a total catastrophe?
Thanks

350???

It is just the one but expensive to fix.

The cooling fluid used in the engine used to corrode the engine head. Also, it had problems to dissipate the heat and overheating lead to head warping.

MB redesigned the head and many units have been converted to the new one at great expense, I believe.

But still most people in the know detest this engine (fitted also to the S class).

Re: 350???

There seem to be various low-mileage LWB ones on mobile.de and autoscout24 (50-80,000 km). Are these worth considering at a lowish price, or best left alone (fsh, low mileage, etc)? One of the sellers informs me that high German Road Tax due to extra pollution makes this model difficult to selllocally, so there coud be room for good bargaining over the price.

Re: 350???

Well first off if you are considering a G350 I would check with your insurance about the cost to insure.

I was contemplating a G350 until I realised it would cost me about £7-800 a year MORE to ensure than a much newer G300 TD - after about three years the G300 TD has paid for itself in insurance - not including the savings coming from a more efficient engine....

And as Mark rightly pointed out - the 300 TD was available in saloon cars in the UK so it should be easier to get parts and servicing. The 350 TD was never available.

Thanks very much- had not considered these. Seems far better to settle for a higher-mileage 300TD both for peace of mind as well as technical superiority.
