the 3rd generation G-Wagen
or rather G-Klasse as Daimler Benz calls it, it will be 100mm wider but visually look much the same, the real changes are downstairs, the chassis will be Aluminum rather than steel saving 400kg in weight

I wonder if it will retain the manually controlled triple locking diffs or will they be replaced by an electronic traction control system.
I didn't actually see a mention of an aluminum chassis in either of the two linked articles. However, if that is the case then metal fatigue could become a problem, as it does on aluminium bikes. Probably, many of the suspension components will be aluminium, but I suspect that the 400lb saving will be wiped-out by all the new electronics and interior appointments.
The width of the present model (minus perhaps wheel arch extensions) was based on military requirements of being able to drive through small European villages and towns with narrow roads. Indeed some holiday destinations I go to, leave only a few cm spare. The extra 100mm would be a no-go for me, but I can see that particularly for the American market, it would be welcome. .
Will this 3rd generation also appear in military guise or does the old one continue in that role?

Means a lot of London G's that can get through some of the narrower streets or ones with the width restrictions ,ay find it a bit harder now! Is this going to be the 465 designation?
Arnie - I understand that the Military will still be 461, have the higher head room and be as narrow as they are today. THough some of the ADF's 6x6's are a tad wider than the normal 461's.
Spider1V
anyones guess but I hope they learn from LR's problems with electrolytic corrosion twixt ally and steel
