Hi there. I have recently bought a 1993 3 door g wagon, the 3 litre diesel model (300d). The vehicle came missing the keys when I bought it so i ordered a new key from Mercedes via germany. The new key fitted the ignition only but doesn't fit the 3 door locks. The previous owner said that it did get broken into some years back, so possibly it's had a set of service locks fitted to the doors. My question is this. Should this era car have one key that fits all the locks on the vehicle including the ignition or does it come with two different keys. One for the doors and one for the ignition. I'm hoping that if I order a set of door locks for the car they'll match the ignition lock. Any advice would be greatly received. Thank you in advance.

Mine is a 1993 SWB 463 - but a petrol.

1 key fits all locks - including the ignition.

Your new key can be made to fit your existing locks; this involves removing and stripping the barrel to the view the key slides, insert you new key and file off the protruding key slides. Do this to all the locks and you have your new key operate all the locks.

Or you can swap the slides around so that they are flush with the barrel, this way all the slides will lock properly, we can do this for you if you need help

Thanks greatly for the feedback on this. I'll have a look at the barrels and see if I can make the required modification. As a matter of interes, what do you charge to do a barrel? Thanks again everyone.

Put a good key and all the barrels that need to be done in a Jiffy bag, we charge £10 each plus £4 recorded del back

If your key already operates all the doors don't you just need to have the ignition barrel sorted??

Or is that me being simplistic?

Perhaps I should've tried to explain my predicament a bit better. Sorry, i'd just woken up off nights and was a little bit hazy! My ignition barrel is original and it fits the brand new key that I ordered from Germany, so it's the three door locks that require altering. Thanks for your help. Ian.

Hi

If all your other doors work off the same key, i would do as Mark says and just do the ignition barrel so it all works with one key

Its way easier than getting all the door locks out

Just a thought

No. I haven't got a key for the three door locks as they were changed in the past for a set of service locks. (I'm led to believe, after it was broken in to). When I purchased the car the seller had lost all the keys. Mercedes sold me the original key which matched the ignition. When I get the three door barrels modified I'll put some feedback up on here just in case someone else has the same issue. Thank you all for your input

Ah Ha

Get a locksmith or auto key to make a key for your locks. They dont charge a lot of money and its way easier and less time consuming than swapping the locks. As someone said swapping the lock plates to match a key is the correct way. I hate to say it but we used to match locks to keys for mercedes years ago and i threw all the old stock in the skip. It has cost me too and it grieves me i could of made many lock sets in the 89 era for many mercedes models.

Your issue is to see if all door locks use the same key or you will have many keys

Or buy a complete lock set which comes with 3 spare keys and does all 3 doors and ignition and glovebox like i did

One key fits all vehicle sorted. The keys dont have black plastic cover so thats an extra. I prefer it that way as you dont have to remove key to press door locks as small metal base clears handle and as i have converted to om606 i have a smart key for ignition.

You have so many choices now all you need to do is pick the best option

Re: Advice sought for a 1993 G wagen key/lock info.

If you want the original keys for the vehicle then the dealer is the only one who can supply this. For this you will need to provide your V5 document plus ID as proof.

If the vehicle has the original set of locks then the one key will fit all but if in the vehicle's history someone has had to replace one or more locks or changed the ignition switch without opting for the original key to be supplied then you will end up with different sets of keys.

It is possible to match what ever the ignition key (lets  dub this the master key) to all of the other locks but this does require each of the locks to be dismantle from the vehicle in order to match the master to the barrel. Matching a different key to the ignition switch; I have never tried before and cannot say for sure if this is at al possible.

Once a key is matched to the other door locks then there is no record of rematching the same by number, only another key cut from a template and this can easily be done at the locksmiths or market stalls.

I contacted MB UK and had to provide proof of ownership. A new key was despatched from Germany which cost me £75. Not bad I thought. I also had all the door lock barrels rebuilt to suit the original key as one lock was replaced in the past due to a break in and the other two were seized. All the locks work off one key now.
