Bargin rims/tyres
I need replacment tyres & can either buy new tyres here & now in N.I.
OR --- do I take the opportunity of grabbing a bargin while en-route to or at our AGM.
Looking for prob 50/50 on/off usuage and fancy sommat fat & grippy
How big can I go on exsisting steel rims ( 1984 300 GD ) ? or do I really need larger/wider rims. Was there the option ( in 1984 ) of a larger rim / tyre as my insurer says 25% loading for non std rims ---- though there may be some room for an innocent misunderstanding
SO --- anyone have a set of suitable rims &/or tyres for sale,or recommend a supplier, part worn tyres may be acceptable.

See Harald's webpage:

All rims marked as "built for" the 460 were at some point used by the 300GD. As for the tyres, I know that some tyre manufaturer list the tyres which are suitable for a given rim size, but I can't find it right now.

Check with Markvulture in this forum. He has some stuff for sale.

Thanks Jesus,
Have used tyre manuf websites before for tractor tyres, what I am after is rim tyre combinations that WILL NOT foul arches under maximum axle articulation combined with full steering lock ---- without getting into suspension modifications.
Would not mind an increase in rolling radius to compensate for lack of 5th gear --- and presuming that this will also increase ground clearance without significantly or adversly affecting low range gearing when off road.

Right then.
If you currently have standard steel rims (part no 460 400 02 02, size 5.5 JK x 16 H2 ET 63) your cheapest-best bet is to fit BFGoodrich Mud Terrain (or even better Track Edge) in size 235/85 R16. This is the widest you can safely go with this rim and it would nicely increase your ground clearance as well as the gearing of our drivetrain. This tyre also nicely fits within the standard wheelarches so that you will have no probs with the MOT. I can vouch for the Track Edges because these are the ones fitted to my GWagen (notice the large diameter of the spare in the pic):
If you want to go wider and stick to the factory fitted 460 rims, your only option is to go for the 15" alloys (part no 460 401 00 02, size 7J x 15 H2 ET 37). Then the best compromise for larger tyre and reasonably longer gearing for a 300 GD, without rubbing, etc, is in my opinion a BFGoodrich Mud Terrain in size 31x10.5 R 15, BUT in this case you'll need the optional extended wheelarches, which cost new an arm and a leg. I believe that Markvulture has a set for sale, though.
This is the combination I had on my older 1984 300 GDS, albeit with 5-speed gearbox instead of 4. Gearing was a bit too long for my current liking but back then it felt perfectly OK. But off-road it was a really good combination which could also be perfectly used on the road.

Hi
I've just posted a set of very neat steel wheels & tyres from my old 280 GE in the classified section if still looking...gary.young@text-alert.co.uk 078 0316 7711.
