Bushing for a Stabilus Steering Damper for my 1993 w463
HI
I have just joined GWOA.
I have had my G for about 12 years and have been going to join for ages. It is a 1993 w463.
My G has just returned from some welding on the chassis and I have found that the steering damper has lost its bushing and botlts, etc.
I really do not want to purchase a complete new one as this one was working fine, but Mercedes tell me that they do not sell the bushings seperately and I will have to purchase a complete new one.
The Steering Damper i have is a Stablilus. Do you know where I can purchase a bushing for it?
Your help and assistance would be much appreciated.
Barry
Hello, and welcome !
I'm afraid that you will have to search around for something that fits, unless someone on the forum happens to have a spare from an old or worn unit. Sometimes MB will say that parts are now only available as complete units, only to find that when you collect them, they actually come in two or three separate packs with separate part numbers. However, I think the steering damper only ever came as a complete part with the bushes. However the mounting bracket and fasteners are separate items.
MB will only sell you the complete damper, if the other end is ok, an engineering place might be able to make one,? Its quick to remove!
When you do refit I highly recommend that you add a big fat heavy duty washer to the outside of the bush. This isn't shown on the MB system as necessary. I fitted a new damper to my 1993 463 and just over a year later I suffered the same problem as you. I couldn't find anywhere to fit a new bush so purchased and fitted a new unit plus the washer. No problem so far.
Look on the net for void bush suppliers. I found some bushes but forget who i got them from
The other option is poly bushes
Just measure the outside of bush and the pin size
Make sure the steel sleeve of original bush is still not in damper or you wont find anything to fit
Often the rubber inner bush falls out but the steel sleeve is still in the damper. I bet it is

Measure it up and look on the net
I have an old damper but once pressed out the bushes are not re usable
I think the company that made the bush i purchased was metrobond or metrubond
Look on for metalastic bushings or void bushes. Many companies like superpro or polybush should be able to help if you dont find anything
Send me the sizes and i will research it for you
i need bush
outside diameter
width
width and hole size of inner sleeve
Some are the same size bushes on both ends of damper. One or two have different bush sizes
Check to see if the good end fits and is the same as you will have something to go off
The outside diameter is critical. The rest can be adapted to suit as long as the bush is wide enough
Its easy for me but if you dont know heres the help you need
Look on shock absorber bushes or as they should be called properly dampers
Most people list it as a shock absorber though
A spring is really a shock absorber and a damper does just what it says
If you get stuck pm me
Not sure how much a Stabilus version is but last time I had to buy the heavy duty version from MB dealer it was £108.68 plus VAT.

Pester me if i forget in a few days

Type "Rubber Bushings" on your browser address bar and a whole host of companies come up. One could have the size you require but selling just one could be an issue for them.
Just studied drawing and it gives no size for the bush only the size of the outer tube
Need the inside diameter to get the correct bushes
