Buyers guide, translated from German (I think quite well)
Founds this ages ago and thought it worth posting to see what people think of the content. Have only just figured out how to post a Word document
Rakesh- it does comment on the fact that many Gs have vibration problems, given your previous article
Buyers guide 2 is prwales edit, made more readable and with additional comments

Re: Buyers guide, translated from German (I think quite well)
I got to agree with jdring:
If I had read this first I would not have bought my G Wagen. Maybe the homepage is not the best place to have it.
If you were new to G ownership and unsure whether to buy - I think this would convince you not to.
You could write a Doc like that for most cars in the world and put people off buying.
I suppose It's the downside of using an owners club forum. You get to see all the possible faults that can occur and often worry needlessly over problems you don't yet have or are ever likely to get.
It's Certainly useful for reference, perhaps just needs buried on another page :)
Re: Buyers guide, translated from German (I think quite well)
In the first couple of sentences the original writer wrote that many of these vehicles are over 20 years old, this is the key to understanding the article. Further problems with the document arise from its lack of detail on the changes in model line up. Particularly those that came with the introduction of the 463. For example how this model addressed the rear 3/4 rust issues and the improvement that came with permanent 4 wheel drive. Which engines went with just the 460 and the different ones in the 463 would help too as many of those listed in the doc are not applicable to official UK imports. The article is a bit warts and all but these are not mainstream vehicles; these were bought by eccentrics who have delved into the detail and chose the G because of its ability, its construction and its quality.

double post

Interesting - enough to put anyone off G ownership! My experience is a G will run and run. All vehicles have issues from time to time but a G is one of the most robust ones.

Re: Buyers guide, translated from German (I think quite well)
Hello AUdiominx,
Thanks for the posting and taking the time to translate it.
I do not deny the authors comments as whole, all the faults he mentions are possible on the G-Wagen and no has said, repairs and maintenance of the G-Wagen, or, for that matter, any 4x4 is cheap, it is not!
The impression, I get from the article, is perhaps, the experience is based of European owned G-Wagens, they are used hard, maybe poor servicing and maintenance and the fact, his experience could be based on a larger G-Wagen sample to draw such comments from, my experience, for the UK market, is based on a smaller G-Wagen sample which contradicts his.
The UK owners, revere their vehicles and do not necessarily push them hard, as is done on the autobahns; how many owners have done 100 mph hours 'on end', on the M25; you can't, it always busy!
The article, mentions CV joints are not repairable and whole shafts have to be bought, true to a point, but in the UK, the customers are more ingenious and find ways to overcome the short comings of the Mercedes policy to restrict the supply from their sources. We can, in the UK, find replacement CV's and their are companies out there, that will re-condition CV's, question is of economic cost.
In summary, on the whole, what he says is true, but applies to the worst conditions, and abused models, by my reckoning. Looking for secondhand G's does require care, patients and knowledge and above all PASSION.
Regards,
Rakesh
Re: Buyers guide, translated from German (I think quite well)
I have improved the radability and saved it as a word doc, how do I post it, anyone?
Re: Buyers guide, translated from German (I think quite well)
Great if people can improve on it. I am afraid I didn't translte it, it was already done but thought that with the abundance of knowledge on this site, people may be able to create something definitive that would be useful

Hello prwales,
When you have opened the REPLY page to this thread, go to the bottom-left of your screen and select your document, COPY it and reduce the screens down until you come back to the GWOA site, PASTE the copied document onto the REPLY WINDOW, a small window will appear asking to ALLOW to open a document or something like that, once you have done that it will take a little time for the download to occur.
Hopefully that should work.
Cheers,
