Changing the wiper spindle seals?
Going on from the "flood" thread below, what's the best way to change the wiper spindle seals?
It looks (rather like a defender) that the top rail of the dash needs to come off to get access?
Also, I have the complete kit (thanks Gav) to change said seals, but there doesn't seem to be much for the actual spindle itself... there's the large round felt washer to go around the locating nut, and a couple of new plastic caps to cover the whole thing, and three rubber bobbins with 3 bolts, which, after looking at the EPC, look like they hold the wiper motor in place.
I take it there's no actual seal inside the threaded shaft that pokes out of the bulkhead and has the wiper spindle inside it?
Luckily the old owner gave me a bit of linkage with a decent tight spindle on it... my passenger one has about 3~4mm movement in it... commonly called shagged I think!
I suppose, seeing as it's the passenger one that's duff, I might be lucky and be able to access it though the glovebox area?
If its a W460 - take the glove box out - I also removed the steering wheel and bits that allow access on that side
A big flat screwdriver can be used to lever off the ball joints but otherwise its quite simple. That's to change the spindles rather than just the seals - frequently the spindles are corroded and need to be changed anyways.
Hopefully!! I did mine and then still leaking! needed carpets out to trace and its still coming in form the firewall, front fenders need to come off to weld up rot. The water coming off the screen runs down the firewall under the battery tray and is getting in.

Yes, a 460.
cheers for that, it's as I imagined. Fortunately I've got part of the dash removed anyway, so looks like it'll be a straight forward job.
At least it should become watertight at last!
