Re: clean looking 460 on Autotrader
It has the rubber spray deflectors missing off the front wings /463 wheels with very thin spacers so the tyres will be rubbing the brake pipes . It has had a very recent paint job , the reassembly has missed the fitting of the front rubber ducky flaps on the wings and it was a steel wheel g and fitting the wide alloys means it should have arch extensions . This needs to be carefully inspected as a quick paint job can hide a real lemon . Read the word of warning post . Just because it looks shiny /good judgement goes out the window. You can see the nice rust stain on the carpet in the picture showing the central console ,this indicates long term water ingress from the wiper spindles and this water wreaks havoc with the interior head lining and the rocker panels becoming rotten from the inside out. Then look further up and look at the lower part of the windscreen frame under the drivers side wiper blade in front of the dash binnacle . Nice big line of rust coming from the inside of the screen rubber.

Another steaming pile of rubbish just waiting to catch someone who is blinded by the cheap blow over paint job. Sadly some people would not notice the missing expensive pieces of trim the painters broke taking off and could not refit . This needs putting on the imaginary database of scrap g wagens up for biggish money.

perhaps we on here could have a database of reg numbers/chassis  of vehicles with known problems for potential buyers to chack against... a kind of 'at risk '  register.... for registered users naturally !

Re: clean looking 460 on Autotrader

Interesting example though. At a first glance it looks ok. The tendency is to let expectation be our guide that can cause even those of us who are intelligent, experienced, and well-trained to overlook some startlingly obvious faults. For some, if not all of us, we see what we want to see.

Once someone (Axel in this case) highlights potential issues, a second look at the advert photos and the faults start to become obvious. Look how far the front wheels stand outside the wheel arch / bumper and then the rust line along the bottom windscreen seal behind the instrument console. Combined with a shiny recent re-spray that looks rushed it creates enough doubt.

But as others point out - some unfortunate will buy this and spend at least same again trying to put it right.

Re: clean looking 460 on Autotrader

Its like one of those spot the difference pictures... the more experience you have with the G the more you see through the glare of shiny bodywork... and all those irregularities start to become obvious... im still learning... and bow down to the eminent and long gathered experience of members here... by reading and asking questions and looking at unsuitable G's over 3 years... i managed to find a honest unspoilt example... i even wriggled off the hook and lure Fixwin placed in front of me, when he offered me vehicles in Private message... preferring to do my own research... as i said I'm still learning... and am grateful for the senior members on here who have helped me and given me free advice...and answered what to them must have seemed like daft questions...  i think the word  'looking' in my original title was accurate... it 'looks' clean to the untrained eye (mine!)... its actually... 'too clean' and as Axel and others could see immediately... all the flaws coming to light...as well as the missing pieces!!

this illustrates why new members looking for a car should ask the advice of members here ... otherwise they may well be taken for a ride..by an unscrupulous seller....with possibly nothing to show for it but a pile of bills and terminally broken enthusiasm ..!

It sounds such an obvious idea - but as there isn't already one I guess there must be a good reason for not having one.

But it definitely gets my vote.

Re: clean looking 460 on Autotrader

I suppose some people might think that if someone says something negative about a car up for sale, and what they say turns out to be false and it harms the sale, then is there a risk of the seller complaining.  I recall Clarkson/BBC getting into hot water when he slated the Tesla.  Personally I think the risk is miniscule if comments are made about a car up for private sale, and the risk is non existent if the comments are actually true.

Agreed . Sadly it seems to be the way of the world that people go and buy a pile of junk like this for £8 k and then come on the gwoa forum like an excited terrier . Then the whole awful business starts to unwind before their eyes as the heap of scrap with its shonky car dealer warranty falls to pieces. Having a list is good / sadly it will not prevent rubbish being sold to trusting people. Also it would be unfair if the vehicle has been attended to but was still on the register. There is no easy answer to this , I feel like calling the dealer and telling him that his vehicle is 'busted' on the UK owners club forum. I doubt they will give a damn as they know some mug will fall for it. Best thing to do is warn anyone you meet who wants a g to get them to join gwoa and get the vehicle looked at properly.

Re: clean looking 460 on Autotrader

I agree with what's been said. But, most, if not all 460s develop some rust, and the wiper-spindle issue although it is a problem that can lead to a lot of internal corrosion in the foot-well area, if left un-checked, is not quite the same as corrosion from the outside, which would also affect chassis and other parts. The interior looks tidy in terms of wear and tear and the steering wheel is not yet worn smooth.. From the pictures, what is visible of the suspension turrets/springs looks to be in good order. There is some body-work trim missing, as has been pointed-out and the wheels appear to be the narrow, 6J x 16" version from the 463, which should fit the 460 without spacers. If the engine, gearboxes, chassis and suspension are all in good order, the other items can be put right, without too much trouble. The price would still be too high, but with negotiation, it could all come right. It needs a more detailed look than judging solely on a few pictures.  It's around 25 years old, after all.

Re: clean looking 460 on Autotrader

.... and this is why I love the forum/club.

The information is there, the experience is there as well as the advice. With the advent of the 'dodgy' dealers from yester year and the new drive from members (and in some cases committee members) is now beginning to show its dividends. I can only hope that it will go from strength to strength over time. Keep the advice, pointers and questions coming!
