Hi

I have posted many times on my g wagon issues and rebuilds

All is well but i thought some axles i purchased from Canada need fitting for a taller top gear

Had them in garage for a couple of years and one of my rebuilt axles became noisey 30k after rebuild???

Its seen a lot of off road but what killed it was cheap bearings. I contacted my bearing supplier and he told me they were chinese bearings. I did not reply as i thought my friend had got them from someone else

He said he only would sell me the best bearings and never that make as they never stock them ever

Lesson to be had is dont believe all people say

Got timken bearings for diff rebuild off my supplier as he says they are the best for the sizes i require. Cheaper total cost than other bearing friend lol

To the point

Got pss wet through 3 nights in a row

swapped diffs and all seems ok

I did get sick of it as it was for a trial and i did think why am i doing this??

I posted before that i achieved 40 mpg but that was very careful cruising at about 54 mph

Truth is i went a long run most of the time at 80 ish and i got a super 20 mpg

So a time for taller gears

Bodged it and did job asap. Tightened pinion bearings too much i feel but its mid limit on mercedes spec sheet

Removed complete hubs and calipers and discs but what a weight to maul back in so not to damage swivel seal

Tried it and done 50 miles with no leaks

40 is now 50    50 is now 62 and 70 is now 73.85 mph

I actually use first

All good and i will let you know if anything keels over

Also i will let you know fuel economy as i have a run planned soon

The last run was 600 miles at 20mpg as i said

The gearing is better but people either put their foot down and it cant pull the ratio so drink fuel or they run at high revs using fuel

I like it to be overgeared as you can always downshift

Keep you posted

Im sure pinion bearings will get warm at those settings but if it all lives and no issues i dont care

I am looking at selling it and getting a unimog

Any unimog experts out there please contact me

Re: diffs

Well ive done 150 miles and all seems good with no leaks

You cant win as it might be a bit over geared i thought until i went a run on the motorway and all is good

I dont suppose anyone has a 463 rhd front axle they wish to sell. I only need casing and swivels but would buy the lot if price is right

I dont want to leave the bits around and would rather build up spare axles but my front one is left hand drive and is bent anyway i think

Happy motoring
