I have just bought a 1992 463 300GDS which runs beautifully and is in very good nick. The only thing that worries me at the moment is a fair build up of diesel smuts on the rear wheel from the side exit exhaust. Is this a regular thing or should I be getting concerned about the state of the engine?

You seem to have lost the tip of te exhaust pipe, which is bent downwards to direct the exhaust fumes to the ground and not directly into the rear LH rim!

The blackened rim is totally normal in these circumstances in a diesel 463!

I have exactly the same problem which I expect to correct in style with a complete custom made stainless steel exhaust system (more to come).

But if you don't want to spend that kind of money you can either buy the part from MB (beware that there are two types depending on whether your car has the side skirts) or have one custom made (probably cheaper if you know where from).

Cheers

Many thanks for that Jesus.

My very first question answered so promptly!
