Hi all... Is there a trick to removing the rear door stay mechanism ? I have removed the three bolts securing it to the door.. But it won't slide out.. There seems to be something stopping it.. It moves around in its channel., but it's like there is a lip in there somewhere stopping it from sliding all the way out.. I have removed the arm from the door end .. Anyone ( I have a new one to put in)

Re: Door stay mechanism removal

I am not very clear at what you are asking. The check strap has two pieces to it, one is the strap and the other its body.

The strap is removable by detaching either a screw head or Allan key head screw from the tailgate pillar/sill end. The strap is then drawn out, towards the end you will have to pull hard to by-pass the roller pinch. The pulling force required is quite strong, so you will have to attach some vice grips close to the door edge onto the strap and with a lever; lever the strap out of its body. Naturally the body has to be mounted to do this.

To remove the body is, by removing the screws you already have, this will slide out to a point but I can not remember what holds it, I have a feeling there is a tab which has to be bent to remove the body out of the door frame.

The strap may be may be renewed on its own without changing the body as this never goes wrong.

Re: Door stay mechanism removal

Hi thanks guys.... it was the broken pin holding the body part in.... once i removed it (thanks Pistonhead) it came out with some wiggling... now have a complete new rear door stay... very happy....

the part that was inside the door was indeed in perfect working order...so if anyone has a broken one mine is available for a very small fee!

the reason i replaced the whole part even though it was just the pin that was broken... was that MB no longer sells the strap separately  ... you have to buy the whole assembly.... didn't want a new part..sitting on a shelf that could be put to use!

Re: Door stay mechanism removal

My Rear door is very stiff to open, I assume this is likely the cause?

I have tried some grease on it..

Re: Door stay mechanism removal
Take the arm/ stay out of the door and off the rear of the car.. Allen key.. There is a spring clip holding the roller and runner guide on.. Take it off and grease the pin that these bits swivel on.. Then the runner and the pin the other end swivels on.. Mine glides now.. The bit inside the door just holds it open at its exteme point.. When you re-assemble make sure the plastic guide goes back in its track correctly.. Mine was very worn and split.. Not available seperately spparently .. Hope this helps John

Re: Door stay mechanism removal

the hinges might need lubrication also...and some Vaseline on the wires on the ribbed plastic shroud that slide into the door jam... if the 463 is the same as the 460

Gav - the game keeper's G300 has nothing of the door stay mechanism left in the door.  Is the whole let available?  I am guessing that the mech is the same as the one in the 460 ('83) and that I could raid that whilst the old beast is awaiting a new fuel to be fitted.  Alan
