Greetings All!

re. 1988 460 with 606A engine transplanted into it to remarkably beneficial effect.

I notice that the engine cooling fan on my vehicle runs all the time - at start up, when idling, when hot, when cool.

The temperature gauge in the dashboard binnacle generally sits at about a quarter up from cold on the dial.

a) Apart from wasting a tiny amount of diesel does this matter?

b) Is it easy to put right?  i.e. cheap and simple, involving minimal blood loss.

My understanding is that this is a viscous fan that should only spin when required for cooling.

Any words of wisdom very gratefully received - as ever.

All the best,

Nick.

Re: Engine Cooling Fan

Hello Nick,

It is very normal for your cooling fan to be free rotating at all speeds as you have quoted.

This rotation is "free wheeling", normal and OK.

The true cooling occurs when required and in this state the viscous fan is in a locking or locked state depending on how hot the engine is. When the fan is locked, is when you hear a loud growling noise as the engine revs.

To expand on this when; if you stand by your offside of the wing, engine hot and running and the bonnet lifted, with an assistant lightly revving the engine you would be able to feel the air in your face or lightly blow hair. Alternatively, on a cold engine and engine OFF, rotate the fan by hand and take a mental note at the effort required to rotate the fan. Then after the engine is hot (after a good and hard five mile run or so) do the same engine switched OFF and compare the difference in effort required to turn fan.  You should find the fan offers a lot more resistance to turn it, but will never be in a locked state that you can not turn the fan. You will be able to turn the fan but with resistance.

Re: Engine Cooling Fan

Sorry to butt in (from someone who knows very little).

Mine is a petrol so I don't know but is a quarter up from cold on the temp gauge "normal"?

Re: Engine Cooling Fan
Aha! Thank you for such a considered and fulsome explanation Rakesh. Now I understand - except for the bit about blowing my hair. I am not blessed in that department... As for "quarter up on the gauge", it has ever been thus Mark and the heater seems to work jolly well. Every good wish to you. Nick.
