Hi all,

My exhaust is looking a bit worse for wear so I'm looking to replace. Mine is currently a side exit, so not an original, and I've heard the originals are a bit of a pain as you need to remove the fuel tank to fit, as well as being very expensive! I think it is an old volvo one, but thats all i know.

does anyone have any recommendations for good exhausts that are not Mercedes, but with similar characteristics?

Thanks

Hagar

Had a 62mm stainless steel by cybox of bromborough Wirral, slightly larger diameter due to 617a turbo diesel engine fitted, cost approx £400 fitted (exhaust only)

Looks smart! I found an old thread on here that also said a stainless custom one is the way forward, and 500 sounds about the ball park, nice one thankyou.

out of interest, what was the performance difference by adding a turbo? and did did you convert it yourself?

thanks

Re: Exhaust system for a 1988 300GD

ebay for "300gd W460 silencer"

Complete parts £300 odd .. I have done most of it; the front is a lash together for a turbo kit for me but it is all mild steel. It seems odd but really only the 300GD system is available as I looked for a 280 system for more flow.

Yes you need to drop the fuel tank (put a plank on a trolley jack) but then that needs done every few years as they tend to rot on top .. so they need a service.. plus you can drain and get rid of black gunk that is no doubt in there.. but you will probably need a new stick on heat shield (like fibreglass with aluminum shell) which is £40 or something.

Changed engine from STD 617 88hp to a US imported 617a 125hp, totally changes the car from being slow to comfortably 75mph down the motorway, it doesn't cost the earth to do the swap and can be done in a day.

side exit makes more sense than running it over the fuel tank

  out the back every day

ground Clarence / noise / smell

   no advantage with side exit
