Fuel gauge not working 1993 300GD any info
The sensor unit is a common issue. It can be repaired but is a fragile and delegate repair. Once removed from the tank, let fuel within the sender drain out in the tank and when empty pull it out completely.
At the base of the sender is a small nut (I think 6mm) undo this and pull the base disc out carefully. The tube section can then be seperated but do so in line and do not remove at a tilt.
Inside the tube is a very thin wire and running along it is a white float. Make sure the wire is not broken, I have not come across any broken wires in my experience but more so once you remove the base disc it seperates with a sandwiched disc, prising the discs apart. Once this is done you may notice it clogged up with gunk in the radial channel in the white disc, clean that off and reassemble. Hopefully fuel can re-enter/drain the assembled tube again for the sender unit to register again.
I would urge one test before reassembly, that is carefuly reattach the sender connections making sure the sensor wire does not get damaged or stressed (It could help if you make some wire extensions to connect this up). Manually move the float up and down the wire and get an assistant to check and see if the fuel gauge registers, if not then you will need to check teh connections on the sender itss elf or you need another unit. Obviously the iginiton has to be switched on for fuel registery.
I did mine about 6 years ago, sort of bayonet fit, not much space, use something across the flats, small spanner etc, gloves useful as edges sharp. Is a breather attached to the top, might just be gunk, etc blocking float, Mark the alloy tube, as easy to assemble incorrectly, wonder how I know??? If possible inspect to see if no loose hoses inside tank? Another issue
