G230 diesel converion
Hi All
I'm new to the site but have already found so much useful stuff.
I recently made the switch to a G230 after years in rusty and cold landrovers.(best move yet).I'm hoping to convert my g230 to a diesel but have questions
What is the best/easiest engine,I have access to a 320 cdi , a 2.5td from 97 c class or a 300 td from a 97 e class.
Do I need new engine mounts and drive shafts and if so are they off the shelf items.( where and partnumbers)
Do I need to move the gearbox.
Should I use the gearbox from doner car if
I have done conversions before but in Landrovers where kits are off the shelf.
I sure this topic has been covered before but I find alot of the info on the net conflicting .So any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Bentreck
Hi
Can I just ask why the change?
Is the petrol engine done?
I have had a 230ge and now have a 300gd and there is little to chose between them on economy.

Hi Bentreck, if you want info on engine conversions come along to Eddie Needamerc's meet up on Valentine's weekend in Dublin. I'll be there with my own G which has an E Class 3.0TD And I'll have a customers conversion on a trailer. Eddies G big green which has a 2.9 musso/sprinter engine in will be there, so there'll be lots for you to see and discuss

Easiest (and IMO best) is OM606 from a 90s E class, coupled with the manual injection pump from the OM603 (diesel shop to swap the plungers in the pump); manual gearbox from one of the later E series (your existing gearbox won't fit). Out-of-the-box you'll see 160HP probably, though much more is readily available if you want to go for it.
Easy is a relative term though.
To do it properly requires a lot of know-how and a lot of fabrication. There are a few people doing cheap, poor conversions; some making things unnecessarily complicated (not a fan of anything that rips ECU/ electronics out to drive OM606 pump for example), some just hacking things together (anyone who does this conversion and doesn't put in an intercooler is hacking it together!).
Done properly includes re-welded (or better still) new sump, engine mounts, that Intercooler (plus all the fabrication to go with it), EGR delete and fabrication around throttle control. The OM606 was available in the 300 Turbodiesel (W463) so many of the MB parts to do the job are available, though in many cases you may choose alternatives for reasons of cost (and providing they are done well, there is no reason you should not).
However, unless you have access to full workshop facilities and are prepared to put the time in, you do much better to pay one of the members here (they will speak for themselves as Gordon has) to do it for you. You'll get a quality end-result that is usable, reliable and re-salable when the time comes.
I would say the easiest is probably the OM605A from the C250TD.
That said, none of the conversions are easy.
You are welcome to visit and discuss.
Did you buy Franks?
Eddie.
Thanks for all the help guys.So I guess no company is making kits off the shelf like they do for landrover.
I'm still trying to decide if I should do this myself or give it to the experts.I,ve done alot in the past on Range Rover and a few marine ones using Nissan and Perkins engines.Where ,I'm a bit stuck is the fab work as I don't have access to the equipment anymore.
To answere some of your question.
No the petrol engine is fine but I just love the diesels.
No I didn't buy Franks ,I went to the UK to a company called Waterside in Southend.
I love to have a look at some of the stuff at Eddies in Feb.
Many Thanks guys
It's good to know that there is helpful people with good advise.
