Hi All,

Does anyone know whether it is only MB that can change the oil/filter on a sealed 4 speed auto box? I'm not sure if it has been done for a while, service history missing for the last 20-30 thousand miles. I called my local dealership and they confirmed its a sealed box and would put an estimate together. Any one know of a reliable, knowledgeable business that can undertake this work?? Herefordshire??

I am quite close the the the Malvern set up but have read a few unfavorable reviews on this site, although the vehicle has been to them with the previous owner.

I have a 2000, G500 RHD LWB in good original condition, slowly ticking the jobs list off.

Best to all,

Chris, Now wet Herefordshire.

To bring me up to speed would you please give your gearbox type/number? I  can then look into this.

Hi,

Its a 4 speed auto box and there is a code of R140 271 26 0 on the side. a different No on the flared bell that I cant read very well. Any other way of determining the correct unit??

Many thanks,

Chris

From the build card in the back of the User Manual. Assuming you have it and it's the same engine.

Hi,

Maybe just me but a g500 - 2000 model........ Is that not a 5-speed???

4-speed was based on my 500GE model being a 93'.  97-2001 rhd G500 should be 5-speed.

Cheers

Hi,

I'm sure your knowledge is better than mine, I was going from what I see on the central console, D,4.

trying to get a vehicle card today so that will clarify.

Thanks for the help,

Cheers,

Chris

The number above has no meaning to me. My research directs me differently Chris. You should have a 5 Speed auto. The gearbox type usually is a 722.6 number; this is stamped in the middle section of the casing just above the gearbox sump pan, mostly on the off side. If this is the one, then the gear box is not sealed as claimed by your M/Benz dealer. The oil pan can be dropped and oil filter renewed except that you don't have an oil dip stick in which case one can be bought for under £30. This is needed to make the final oil level check.

If you can PM me your chassis number I take more definite look into this. Most import info needed on either mechanical or parts info is the chassis number; the M/B network is blind without it.
