GE230 on EBay. Good price?
Hi G members
I've been looking for a G on a budget and found this Ad on EBay
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/252233865916
It looks quite original although a bit tatty
Does anyone know about this car?
Any immediate problems you can see with the G?
Any help to point me in the right direction
Cheers
maybe mark howes will have a look as its very close to him
a bit of body work back end and some small parts missing
far from scrap but work needed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry mark but its at the end of the road
I'd be happy to go and have a look - as Adrian says, I'm a LOT closer to it than Sunderland is.
BUT - I'm not a mechanic and I'm not all that technically minded and I have no real idea how much bodywork repairs cost. I could probably give you a better idea of just how bad that rust is, whether it does actually start, run, steer, stop etc.
Best if you give me some idea what it is you expect from this G and how able you are to do any necessary work on it yourself? From the pictures, to me, it looks like quite a lot of work needed.
Oh dear - "good working order" and "reliable" - don't forget that you are looking at a 30 year old car and as such it is always going to need some money spending on it on a fairly regular basis, especially if you want it to remain reliable. Not really sure what you should expect for £5,000 but maybe better than this.
Have you noticed this one for sale under Classified ads on this site - http://www.gwoa.co.uk/content/w460-swb-230-ge-manual
I don't know the car or the seller but worth asking for some decent photos and whether he is prepared to get an MOT done before sale. Same spec and same money as the one you were looking at and he says o.n.o. so some room for negotiation.
Maybe we have a member near Harrow/Pinner that could take a look for you if the photos and MOT situation look promising?
Upside is it's unmolested. The 230 has a great reputation.
Here's another one to think about.
I'm not a fan of LPG conversions personally (that tank's got to go somewhere) but at least you can see where he's had the usual rust areas attended to. No pictures of the interior so can't compare that with the ebay one.
Really just pointing it out as the answer seems to be - yes there are Gs out there at £5,000 or lower.

Might be worth contacting the seller and asking for a load more good images (at least the interior and underneath) and details. Who knows, it might even have an MOT??

not G Wagens, but goes to show...
On the same page on carandclassic is a really good (looking)blue 280ge for £12k. Trade sale in Essex
Does anyone know the trade seller. I am sure the same car was for sale last year from a company called Waterside at less money but Waterside seem to have disappeared.
I had an LPG converted ge280, it didn't go well, but perhaps it was the fact it was an auto, it idled at 1500 revs. On the plus side the positioning of the tanks was a minor triumph, it took 2, 40 litre tanks mounted underneath in the spaces twixt the prop and the edge of the body, one on each side with the exhaust centrally mounted and as a side exit

The 280 engine is a horrible engine on lpg and will never really run right.
Sadly G wagons MOT'D G wagons that require no panelwork or paint are just not around for under 5k anymore.

This is probably the closest thing the OP will find to what he wants but it's more than 5k (as it should be!)
And here's one that might be in your price range.

I don't know the car but from the pics it looks in better shape that the one you were originally considering. Still a long way from Sunderland but might be worth a call to the auctioneers for more details and then an appeal on here in case anyone is near that could take an educated look beforehand.
i sold that just over 12 month ago , it was originally in jewish racing gold, it spent a lot of its life in sale, cheshire and a jeweller bought it from southend, it did have a lot of history. 280 tho , 3 lamp posts to the gallon !
Jordord,
Did you ever find anything that took your fancy. Or have you given up?
Here's one that is for sale in your neck of the woods. Worth going to have a look if you are still looking.

Hi Mark
Thank you for offering to see the G for me. As you have both mentioned it needs quite a bit work. I just want something reliable what I can jump in and drive. I don't really wanting to be changing panels and full paint jobs because the money will run away with it. Also it has a few parts missing has me a little worried.
Would I expect to get something in good working order with an MoT for £5000?
Cheers
