Gearbox leak from rear
I have a 300 gd 86 model,5 speed man. gearbox.
Gearbox suddenly start leaking from rear, output shaft to the reduction rearbox.
I use the recommended ATF suffix A oil.And have hade for a long periode a small leak from the front also.
I have tried a oil leak stopper from Omega .But has not helpt here.
Is it worth trying with a 80-90 W gear oil ?
To change the rear seal ,must the this be replaced from the inside of the gear box ?
It is easy enough to remove the box. I would say it is a good time to overhaul it. The 5th gear always gives trouble.
Or talk to Guido about getting a box with different ratios that might suit your use better. He always has a good selection.

Hello Kurtpet,
If your oil leak has suddenly started as you say, shortly after using an oil stopper additive then I am not surprised at your sudden increased oil leak. Oil stoppers seem to have a 50/50 chance of working, either they help or makes matters worse.
The rear seal can be renewed externally but the rear propeller shaft (front joint) and flange needs to be removed.
You could try out the 80/90W oil but I expect a small leak may still be present. Try and see, it may allow you more time before you had to change the rear seal. In either case keep an eye on the leak and replenishing the gear box oil. Other than that keep a tray with some boxed card in it to absorb leaking oil so not to spoil your parking spot.
Note:
Depending on the looseness of your box, using mineral oil may cause difficult 1st to 2nd gear changes.

Just remove the short shaft between the gearbox and the transfer case (reduction) then the gearbox comes out easily.
I am only suggesting removing it because 5th gear in the civilian Getrag 5 speed is a known weakness. It is better to overhaul the box (using a specialist) now, before it self destructs, which it will certainly do. Just my experienced opinion. The 4 speed box is much stronger, the 5 speed is a modified 4 speed and is weaker. There are military 5 speeds that are very strong.

Hi Kurt
See attached picture...
Front and Rear Seals are available from MB Germany
Front Seal requires the Gearbox to be removed from the vehicle and Cover 23, Tube 32 and Shim 35 to be removed to access the Seal 38 ( After removing the Clutch Fork, not shown)
Rear Seal could be done with just the Gearbox to Transfer Case Prop Shaft removed but would be easier with the Gearbox removed, Nut 65 needs to be undone and Flange 62 removed to access Seal 59.
New Seals are inexpensive, a new nut is good practice as although they usually go back on, you never know and don't want to be stuck awaiting a £5 Nut!!!
If you need more help or information please post or PM, I could possible help with the parts if you're stuck on supply.
I would need the chassis number just to double check the right Gearbox type etc...
Hope this helps
Gav
Thank you !

Cheers gaz
Thank you !
I changed my engine last year.,leaving the gearbox in the car. There was no troubel with it,just changed clutch and clutch bearing .
Is it enough space between gearbox and reduction gearbox to take down the gearbox, without moving the red.gearbox ?
Is is a difficult job ,who needs spesial tools to renew the gearbox front and rear seal ?
Any good manuals somewhere ?
