Re: general

Another vote for the torch keyrings.

All the red paint has worn off mine - although the torch does still work and it's really handy to locate the keyhole in the dark which avoids scratching the paintwork wink.

Yes true. A simple thing but im lost without it. It was always on my keyring and still is

How sad to be bothered about a keyring torch. It was just good and looked good

Yes, indeed. This is a friendly site with ne'er a curmudgeon to be seen. Questions - however complex, however trivial - are always answered. The keyring's good too. And my battery still lights up the light.

Re: general

Most new web content is created now behind the firewall of Facebook as that is where newer folk go as it is easier to understand, you do not need to log in, easy to share photos, new posts every few seconds etc. Google search is not allowed to roam Facebook so content stays hidden from outside. So Forums are slowly dying but seem to be the better solution for long term technical information. FB is more on the here and now and from what I have seen/read seems to delete content and keep the churn of "new" info coming so uses click on it. So FB does not want historical threads on forums .. plus no doubt they own the content so will have a hold. Anyway.. not gone there but it is very bleak/quiet out here!

We might be die hards then

I dont do facebook only very occasionally. Much better on here

Its odd as on facebook everyone seems to find out your business. Just me not keen

On here its just the gwoa that sees stuff and not everyones friends and family knowing everything i do

Like to post between fellow members and thats it

Still not helping my keyring. Its time for the bin i think RIP good gadget

Yes there are loads of similar things on evil bay for 99p. I will get over it

Re: general
Hoping to get general G-Wagen news I joined FB last year. After a month of battle fatigue wearing, AK47 toting desperadoes wanting to be my friends and various entreaties to buy/boycott certain brands of childrens nappies I decided to leave it well alone. I understand that I will miss out on some items, which is unfortunate, but at least I no longer get bombarded with time wasting nonsense. My mobile 'phone contact list serves me well enough. Progress, eh! Don't you just love it.

Re: general

Nothing wrong with a moderately quiet forum, saves sifting through reams of mindless drivel on what the press refer to as "social media".

I am in full agreement with the usefulness of the little keyring torches, mine worked for years until I dropped it in the yard then run over with a 44 ton MB Actros.  My own stupid fault for dropping it I suppose.

Things were a bit silent on the subject of the 2017 AGM.  Gavin inquired about date and venue last Autumn but ne-er a response.  This leads me to assume that we did not have one as there is no mention elsewhere.

Being in the south west region I am a little envious of those of you north of Hadrians Wall with more interesting weather to enjoy your G Wagens in.  All we seem to get in this region is rain, drizzle and more rain.

Enough for now. Best wishes to all for 2018.

Re: general

I wonder if it was Tony Baskill who really pushed the AGM and it will now be something to be remembered rather than to look forward to.

Maybe the idea of "meetings" could be resurrected? It's always nice to see a group of Gs and their owners.

Cheekily, I would opt for those "kitty" laser lights, It has a powerful light, low powered red laser pointer and a dimmer blue light in a small tube shape - very versatile.

Re: general

Its the torch i miss lol

Do we still have to pay membership?. I dont recall seeing a reminder unless i did it by direct debit. I have emailed but no reply. Not once but a few times

This is not helping

Also messages. What more can i do i just get message  not sent contact admin every time i send a pm

Is this helping the forum??

No its not helping for me

Sad times What more can i do. Make it great or loose it as i dont do face book

Do free membership and let people say what they want like on other forums. The assholes will burn out and the usual people and new members will be just fine

Its not the money for joining as i have said many times its just look after people who are true to gwoa

I know some people are taking up valuable time for this but come on at least reply. Its been 6 months

I have vented in the past and put may good posts too. I try to help but i get no help

If you want me off here thats fine but at least reply to my emails

Im sorry to all new members to write this but its a great site and easy to use so stay with it. I just dont think they like to reply to me or my posts. What else can i do ?? Its here in black and white

Many other people who are very very clued up on engines and g wagons left ages ago. I am not going the facebook route i just have my own projects and dont do facebook

My option

Get it sorted. Contact people who have left and give them an incentive to come back. 6 people i am thinking off or more who really helped with little thanks. Not from gwoa but in general. They have gone to a free site i think

Heres one for you

My projects on a random site. He did it all and answered my question in his way. How good is that. Here is a 5 minute video from a top expert busy person all for free. He was keen on my projects

He is the main man and its his page

So lets forget the meetings etc as no one is interested

Days out for free and meet ups might work. Pay first and everyone will back out or wont commit

Just bring some uk trips or days out or meets. See who turns up

Get this site like it was years ago

Full on . Tech .. trips . repairs and anything else g wagon or not including any issues with members and fall outs. It makes it fun in all aspects and helps to get an answer and also resolve issues if any

Its all good reading

I would say more help or at least a reply from the admin. Good or bad at least its a reply

The expenses the money etc etc where does it all go??. Nothing much has happened in the last few years

Forget the agm at nice mercedes garages. I have been to 2 of them. Waste of money

Do a drive out and a bbq with a talk and that would win. Just more social would work for me

Its hard to please everyone but your good efforts seem wasted

Everyone is different so try something new

It still might not work but at least answer my e mails for a starter

Do you still charge £25 to join???. Scrap the charge and get many  new members

I never understood 4 members is £100 so where is all the money going now????

I think free or £1 to join as we are not getting a lot for £25 each for full members. No discounts for spares no free entry for shows etc etc. All we get is a forum like any other free forum. All i ask is for an accounts sheet for the last 3 years to be posted. to see where the money is going

It might be free i have not checked my statements. If its free now i apologise. If its direct debit please send your accounts forms. My junior is studying accounts for the council and this would be a good project as its a small concern. No issues its just his project

Just arrange random meets across the uk. Just for a social and see who turns up

My schedule of work is busy so i might not make it or i might be there. Who knows what will happen

Everyone is busy

A burger at wimpey milford common in staffordshire and a road trip would work for me

All planning and thats time but would be fun. I would have to make the effort to be there

All just a thought

I thought i should not post this. Should i??? should i not????

Sod it members are going too fast. Its not meant in a good or bad way its just what i feel

I am sure i am wrong on many points and right on others. Lets have it sorted and get what we want

I am sure its not easy doing the admin but you took it on at £25 per member where other sites are free so make it worth it and think on

Yes i appreciate no adverts more than anyone to keep the site advert free. Yes it worth £25 a year just not to have adverts or pop ups but how much does that cost??

Had a push to ask all this info. Its not just me

No i am not short for £25 a year but some people are so lets see what they are getting for their money

Im sorry its rude but no one else will ask. Theres either a problem with you responding to my emails or a fault as i have had no reply in months after repeated attempts

Had no choice but to air my views and concerns on here. Ban me or take note and act on this matter

Re: general

Just as well we don't charge by the length of posts smiley

Since Tony's death there is no effective Admin at the moment, just me and I am not here all that often and don't have access to the admin emails.

We will need to organise a re-structure of the committee at some point and get a new membership secretary. Tony had been arranging the 2017 AGM but sadly he was unable to complete the arrangements.

As far as membership fees are concerned all of the money is held in the club bank account as per the last accounts. If you want a copy of the accounts email the Chairman through the members section, if your not a member then they are available via the Companies House website.

Once a new membership secretary has been appointed then he will no doubt email everyone and advise of membership fees and how to pay.

The current website operating system Drupal is beyond its life span and needs to be updated as it no longer supports upgrades. This was the last thing that Tony was working on before he passed away.

There is considerable cost involved in transferring to a new operating system, because the GWOA has been in existence for such a long time and has built up a huge forum archive of G related information that we don't want to lose. However it is very important that we do sort out a new operating system sooner rather than later so the GWOA website can continue.

I don't have all the information but maybe this will answer some of your questions.

Doug.

Re: general

Hi Doug

Thanks for the info. This needs addressing sooner rather than later. The lay out and ease of use with no pop ups or adverts is brilliant

Dont let this club go to ruin. I hate facebook and would rather be on here. I cant type so well on facebook

Its up to us all to help if we can

If Tony was doing it we need to try. Not just admin but all of us

Can someone type a plan up so people can reply with what they want etc. All the info is on here almost everything

The cost is fine

We need an off road trip page i think where people can arrange days out. Yes 20 will say they will attend but only 2 will turn up but thats a start

I know its not easy and i have no interest looking at the accounts. If we are in credit lets arrange a few bbqs or days out that are cheap and spend some of the money

Some in south ,midlands , northern etc. Just some meet ups would be good

Get people interested and talking. Easier said than done i know but worth a go

Empty some of the pot and spray my bonnet and wings. The laquer has peeled a bit. Im sure thats a good cause????????????????

We cant loose anyone else. Cant admin email the people who were on here to see why they have left

Every forum has assholes but its more to talk about. Some of the busiest forums have many but they are busy. Its a difficult compromise. Ban an idiot and you will lose 2 more who are their friends

A difficult task but this site is the best

No replies from admin was not good to be fair and it annoyed me. That costs just a reply good or bad thats free and takes seconds. This is a priority issue. not for me but 2 other people said the same hence my long post

I think I'm with Gaz there - "This site as in the lay out is fine". OK it might not have all the bells and whistles of up to the minute sites but it does the job very well. It's simple to use (I can use it so it must be).

I know there were some concerns expressed about it's security but do we really care if someone manages to get access to all the posts from years gone by. In a way that's what it's there for. As far as I'm aware there are no particularly private details stored (bank account details of members etc.). I bet that g wagon g isn't even his real name. And the cost of upgrading was VERY high.

I've been subjected to a few "website upgrades/updates" recently, some by very big companies (Barclays for one) and I can tell you that they often don't go smoothly. I bet Barclays Stockbrokers won't even admit how many customers they've lost over the past year as a result of their change of platform.

If it ain't broke don't fix it - especially if the cost is going to run in to many thousands of pounds.

Re: general

The site seems fine to me and I can't envisage what benefits might result from updating it.  Probably nothing that would justify the expense so I vote for keeping things as they are.  I've only attended 1 AGM and two meets but am certainly up for supporting more events this year as I become an OAP in a week.

Great we have one person on board. Dont think be sure its what people want. If there is a vote and everyone gets what they want thats good. If they leave after 2 months they were not interested anyway

Well done you on your free bus ticket. Do they still offer that for oap??? Well done and i hope you are in good health etc

I think it would take ery little to get this site sorted with no money needed just some input and help

I like it as it is but simple things need fixing, very simple

Would a £1 membership work?? or free. I hate to say it but free membership forums are very busy. Ive said it about 20 times since 5 years ago. No one listened now its time to think on it

Easier said than done and needs commited people. Adverts to pay for the hassle or cheap joining fees

I dont know what is best but it could be sorted

Bad issues have happened but that can never be controlled 24/7 so its normal. I dont know . A few are on board but if it wont work just give up

Sad times but this site has gone from being the very best to like a graveyard for the die hards

Gaz > Dont knock Barclays. Its the only bank in our town that has not shut down and moved 12 miles away. The other cheeky bastard banks offered £100 to swap to their banks. Some people took up the deal. Idiots. To travel 12 miles with fuel prices and waste time and parking fees lol. That £100 would be used in a month. Barclays is the only bank left in town and they have been fair with me. If Barclays goes its another nail in the box. The other banks said pay in at the post office. Well they are screwed as the post office shut a few weeks ago. I think Barclays knew this years ago. Bank very busy and lots or new customers changing over every time i visit. No im not minted just paying bills sadly. Nothing to do with g wagons but interesting to read random stuff

I hardly use Benzworld or other similar sites now as there are adverts and videos popping up everywhere.

Mercedes Benz Owners (MBO) -http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php-  like GWOA is still OK and ad-free.

It is Drupal who were stopping support for it as there were upgrading hence so had the GWOA. That is as far as I can ascertain.

I am loyal to the GWOA and I would say it has some short failings but this all boils down to the voluntary efforts behind the scenes.

We need to remember that these guys efforts are free and they do as much as possible in the free time they have. Members and non-members if you want change and can devote your time please come forward.

For the same reasons I have quoted and these are my personal feelings; the GWOA are very frugal in putting out information and that is my only gripe. I used to be more pro-active but due to my personal circumstances I am not as active as I would like to be. I find Arnie's contributions very informative and always welcome his input; he surpasses my experiences and knowledge.

Please excuse any repetition here, I have not read all the above threads.

Re: general

What might help would be getting more of a handle on where people are located.  g wagen g your location is given as uk which I think is a bit too vague.  I would be interested in getting together with others in my region but apart from "phileas" I don't know anyone in the Cambs area.  We met up once at a local pub with Jo Askew so there were three of us.  I know of two others locally because I've seen their vehicles in the same garage that phileas and I use - a very G friendly outfit, but I don't think they are GWOA members.      Is there a way in which we could mark locations on a map?  My IT skills are non existent but someone else on here must know the answer.
