Hello All,

Have been looking to get an iconic 4x4 and having considered the options it seems a G is the way forward.

Back in the day as a child,  I had a Tamiya toy G Wagen which I enjoyed building, taking apart and building again. Now it's time to do the same on a full size version.

I prefer the  more unique look of the 460 but the additional refinement etc of the 463 is hard to ignore.  It seems there are people wanting to make a 460 look like a 463 but nobody wanting to go the other way as I do. Obviously such things are frowned upon by the purists but to each their own I say.

Anyways, hopefully I can call upon you all for advice in obtaining a nice black SWB money pit.

Adrian

Re: Hello G Folks

That's something a bit different, wanting to convert a 463 to a 460.

In fact that might be unique in the history of this website smiley.

Re: Hello G Folks

When you say 'refinement' - by that you mean 'unnecessary complexity, worse build quality and consequent reliability'?

Now where did I put that popcorn...

P.S. What you really want is a 461 / PUR Edition.

Re: Hello G Folks

Burn them!!!! ( and fcp to!) laugh

Hello and welcome Muzz, glad to see the G bug has remained strong since the Tamiya days! In support of what fcp has said, if you enjoy the 'agricultural' feel, then certainly the 460 is the way to go, however the sophistication and refinement of; aircon, leather, wood, carpet and still be able to go where the others go, then a 463 would be the ideal purchase. (it is at this point I will state at the 2012 AGM in Derbyshire mine (a 463) was he only G to make it to the top of the wet grassy hill (many thanks Mr Chairman for applying the diffs at the right time!)

Please do take a look through the buying guide and heed the warnings posted, as there is a number of people out there that will take your hard earned money and give you a 'pig in a poke!' angry so ask as many questions as you like, comments, thoughts etc. To find the right G will take you some time, though I suggest you read the 'G Fever' post as it affects everyone looking for a G!

Looking forward to watching the progress

Kind regards

Spider1V

What Spider neglected to tell you and in the sad absence of Mr B... i will...

Is that said 463 and i understand one other went out to play on a certain Salisbury Plain...with 1 other 460 and a 461

Guess which 2 went home on recovery trucks...

Answers on a the back of a Tamiya box please... ;)

Clue, Jacky preferred the ones that made it home under their own steam....

Now how about a 463 that looks like a 461 PUR..... Now you have something ;0)

Re: Hello G Folks

I fell the need to say, as the owner of one of the 463 that day( the one without leather)... Mine went home as a result of a burnt out roter are and distribution cap. witch I am told is some thing that some 300 engines suffer from. There for not a results of driving around the plane.

Re: Hello G Folks

Having owned a 460 diesel 3 litre, a 460 petrol 280 auto and currently a 463 300 petrol, I don't believe a word of the criticism of the w463. It's the better car by miles. Avoid anything built during the ill fated Chrysler merger era and you'll be more than happy. If a w460 is your bag and theres nowt wrong with them as such [save the rear 3/4 rust] but you will need to spend the best part of £10k to bring it into the modern world, the engines just aren't good enough so they need to be binned; introduce a new engine and you'll need a new gearbox too. Hence the expense, all for something that doesn't have the feel of full time four wheel drive or the rust protection of the w463.

LOL OK it was me, however in my defense it was an alternator that had done 150K miles, been submerged on a few occasions, both in Mud and water and the warning light had been going off all day, but was having too much fun.

The interesting point I did note, was that the G's system, to preserve the power, was a bit like the part in terminator, when its re directing power to the critical parts, but shutting down non essential systems. Sat Nav went off, followed by cd player, followed by ABS, and so on until finally the lights gave up and I rolled to a stop......................just by a junction................the busiest junctiond on the A303..................on a sunday evening.................not a popular guy I can tell you.

Still - you can in a G wink

Re: Hello G Folks

Hi

I bet you are a bit younger than me looking at the model g

Its funny how things go and your post has made me reflect on this

I never knew my proper dad but when i was a kid my folks bought me a radio controlled g wagon (stepfather and mum god bless them )

Radio controlled was pretty new then. It was white with proper looking rubber tyres. I loved it and wished i still had it. I remember it ate ever ready red batteries.

What fun i had making ramps out of place mats and living the dream

My memory is shit and only your post jogged it into life        cheers             those were happy days

Bugger me i now have a g wagon,   How strange is that. I also had a batmobile that used to fire little pastic rockets but i dont see me getting one of those lol

This has nothing to do with your question but youve made me happy

Re: Hello G Folks
Yes yes yes, I also made ramps out of place mats but always wanted to go bigger and higher. Tried to run it on 9V batteries rather than the AA's! Forgot how it chewed through those ever-ready batteries, haha. Great memories.

Re: Hello G Folks

Childhood, eh? When I was tiny, my mothers godmother, with amazing foresight bought me a toy tractor, much to the horror of most of my other relatives, it not being a girly present. For many years Tractor came everywhere in my dolls pram with me, the dolls being left at home. There were few photos of me as a kid without Tractor in them too. I also had a collection of Matchbox cars (first one an Austen 1100) and a mini that you pulled backwards and it then took off which I still have.

I now put this down to my love of vehicles and the fact that having children has never interested me. A G and a Saab 900 convertible win wheels down any time over small people!

Oh and animals too, currently a small horse- probably about half a horsepower......

Re: Hello G Folks

I have a 1993 300GDS (463). Does have a towbar that I could pull a horse box but my pony is so small I could probably put him in the back!! He's a miniature Shetland (32" high) so I have just borrowed a livestock trailer from a farmer friend when I have needed it as he just rattles around in even the smallest horse box.

I admire people who manage to fit kids in their lives as it shows a far greater degree of patience and organisation than I have. I know that I am too irresponsible to manage

Am with your wife all the way regarding dogs, unfortunately mine died of old age and with the hours I work it would not be fair to have another at the moment.

I have a G Wagen. They DON'T get stuck. They are the ones that pull others out!! There is a farmer locally who told me that over the years his uncle has had five Gs, as they were the only vehicles that would put up with him!!

W463...... Full time four wheel drive is definitely a major plus over the two wheel drive on road of the W460  but the engines availlable are still a disappointment.

300 petrol

reasonable power but 14mpg????

300 diesel  reasonable mpg but you have to drive it like a two stroke

G500. Lovely smooth torquey powerful engine great if your first name is sheik or you just want to polish it and drive it on Sundays but 12 mpg ,,,, really

Also the W463 is a difficult vehicle to do an engine conversion (just ask Axel) decide what you what from your G and how your going to drive it before you make the decision what to buy, the extra money you spend on a W463 may not get you what you want. Be aware that contributors telling you W463 petrols are great just may have one available in classifieds.

Re: Hello G Folks

the w463 300 Auto will get you 17mpg, my manual averages 19/20 in mixed driving nearer 25 on a long motorway run at a 60mph average. Your diesel won't do much better its 10% more expensive to buy diesel fuel it needs more frequent oil changes and it spews out carcinogens.

Re: Hello G Folks

You sound a very busy egg

No chance of an off road trail then

Just been out with kev a couple of weeks ago. You would love it

They do horse treks over the ground we travelled for miles and drop kit off in advance. A pair of saddlebags and away you go with map in hand

My mate went and has never shut up about it since

Happy days
