First post from new member...

Just adopted a G-Wagen after hovvering around the idea since the early ninetiessmiley

All good so far - it's nearly 21 hours already. Disappointed there'll be no snow here this weekend though!

So many questions!

First question re the Forum has to be:

"Why, when I press the return-key, does the whole message drop down?!"

Secondly, I have read the posts about avoiding certain "specialists" but I'd love to know who best to take my car to for repairs please?

Happy to travel for good, honest, correct work - West London to Oxford corridor is best.

All suggestions very welcome, thank you.

Looking through its history, my car seems to eat steering shock absorbers and electric window mechs.

Is this normal please and is there a permanent fix available?

Anyway, a big "hello" to all G-Enthusiasts here from this new owner.

Hello OE68 and welcome. Lots of very knowledgeable people on here.

You don't say which year or model you've bought.

When you say it eats steering shock absorbers, how quickly do you mean?

Steering damper replacement is pretty common and very minor

Electrics?  All electrics wear out.  I have electric windows and they are a pain, but work slowly.

I am in Oxon also.  G230 Auto.  I used to have G203 Manual.

Re: Hello from not-snowy Oxfordshire...

Thank you for the replies and the welcome!

Mine is a 300GES auto.

Lots of little things to sort out but nothing major so far....

Fingers crossed!

Update on progress to follow.

Hope to meet some other G Wagen owners soon.

Re: Hello from not-snowy Oxfordshire...

Good choice.

Re the steering damper - if it does now need replacing I'd recommend the MB heavy duty version (not shown on the MB system). Last time I needed one it cost £108 plus VAT. Simple job to replace (even for me) but definitely add a heavy duty washer to stop the bush and nut being pulled through - that's what happened to mine 2 years and 3 weeks after replacing.

Re: Hello from not-snowy Oxfordshire...

Thank you, Mark

The current damper is fine, most recent invoice shows it had the 'upgraded' version fitted.

I mentioned it in my introduction because it has come up so frequently in the car's history.

Fingers crossed that the upgrade lasts longer. (I will check re extra washer - sounds like a good idea, especially given the 18" wheels)

My plan is to put a few miles on the clock to try everything out then hand over to someone with a full job-list to bring the car back to 100%

I have no relevant skills so will almost certainly be relying on more than one person/firm/specialist!

Thanks JDRing, too. My windows had a full work-over last August with all new parts and already the driver's is slow and the passenger's doesn't work at all... I will take it back to the specialist but don't know where I stand if it was the last owner who paid the (HUGE) bill.

We might be near-neighbours if you're South of Oxford? (close to Henley?)

Thanks again to everyone for a very informative forum (maybe it should be renamed  "inform'em"?)

There's a lot of useful and interesting stuff on here - I am already in trouble at home for spending too much time on my 'research'!)
