Intermitent Engine stopping
The engine ( 463- 300e) has developed a rather strange behaviour recently. Whereas the engine will fire almost immediately from cold and will idle happily, driving after a couple of miles, it will switch off on its own accord. But then, it will restart immediately upon turning the ignition switch and will drive again normally until this problem repeats itself. This will, happen a couple of times, and after that the car will drive normally for the rest of the trip.
Any ideas of what is the culprit ???
Fuel filter??, loose connection?? faulty fuel pump relay???
Battery and earth cable are tight.
Thanks
I had a problem (also with a 463 G300) that started out exactly like this
I didn't worry too much about it - until it developed further and wouldn't re-start until it had been left alone for a while (say 30 minutes or longer).
I spent quite a bit on new rotor, new HT leads, new distributor cover etc. but it didn't make any difference.
Then I bought a new fuel pump relay on ebay - chinese copy so bit worried about how that would work out. Popped the old relay out, popped the new relay in and had no problem since. Only cost £27 (MB price from memory was almost £100). It came with a 2 year warranty (not sure whether that's worth anything). Your post just reminded me to buy another as a spare, just in case it doesn't last all that long.
Firstly,
- CHECK & IF REQUIRED replace the rotor arm and distributor cap; if there is condensation in the cap dry it off.
- Check for any vacuum leaks in the induction system
- Possibly fuel/ignition relay
- Bad or poor connection on fuel pump
- Bad or poor connection on ignition system
The above are probably most likely any more than this then will require more information and 'to-ing' and 'fro-ing'.
My broadband access is nearly over and I need to be out of this access source.
