Looking to buy - anyone local to view with me?
Hoping someone can help, I am seriously interested in buying a G300 that I've seen locally. However having never owned a G before I would really like to bring someone along who knows what they're looking at. More than happy to treat you to lunch/drink etc etc! I'm based in W Sussex and could possibly collect you too if not too far away?
Many thanks.
Take lots of pics as well and post them up here, there are lots of sharp eyes to spot issues
Open the sunroof fully and stand up in the car like hitler, then check in the front corners, the drain pipes are welded into the roof, they have a tendency to rust away and leak.
Where in West Sussex?
Where abouts are you?
I'm not a mechanic and have only owned my SWB G300 for less than 2 years so definitely not the best person to give an opinion.
But I am just the other side of Brighton, so not too far away.
Have you driven any G Wagons before? - they're a lot different to your current transports.
Is the one you're interested in a SWB or a LWB and diesel or petrol? Has it been advertised? If so post a link to it on here and there are lots and lots of knowledgeable people more than happy to give comments.
Stain on the headlining is a pain and not always easy to work out the cause. As well as the drains, another possibility is that the sunroof doesn't always close properly especially if not used much. It looks closed from the inside but from above you can see that it hasn't located fully. Leave it out overnight in the rain and water will get in.
And give some thought to whether or not you would be able to live with that stain if you bought the G because getting the headlining out and back in again is not a simple quick job.
Mine is also a G300 SWB petrol - so easy to compare the two.
As you say - not much detail on the ebay ad but from pictures it does look nice. Japanese cars have a lot going for them - those I've seen have worn much better than UK cars. Usually low mileage and very clean underneath with very little or no rust at all. They also usually have aircon which is nice when we have a summer as they can get very warm inside with all that glass.
Give it a few days to see if some mechanically minded member comes along that can view it with you. If not then I'd be happy to do so - but bear in mind I am NOT a mechanic and that is what I would call top money for a SWB G300 so you want to be sure it's a good one and won't need money spending on it straight away.
You need to check what's under the bonnet if it is a 320 or a 300, the 320 is the m104 twin cam engine, smooth, powerful but with issues around the wiring loom, the brief explanation is that these are biodegradable and are a £500 fix if they an early model. These engines are exceptionally rare in a G in the UK but with a nice balance of torque and bhp. The 300 ge is robust reliable and adequate but the 320 is a step up
Don't forget to factor in cost of spare wheel and mounting if not already purchased -if already purchased you will probably already have done your maths
I am in SW London, but Worthing may not be too far.
Thanks, will do. The car is a Japanese import, to my eyes it looks clean. Hoping to get it up on ramps in the coming days to have a good poke about underneath.
One point to note - there looks to be some staining on the roof lining indicating an old/current leak near the sunroof. Is this a common issue? I am planning on running a hose over the roof to see if anything comes through. The lining doesn't feel damp, and there's no indication of worn seal/rust on the roof.
