Hi all, Just joined the G.W.O.A. forum. Some of you may already know but for those who don't here are a few tips. I had to replace a track rod end and mercedes were wanting a small fortune for it but my pal in my local motor factor ( MOTOVATION ) instantly recognised the part in my hand and came over with a ford transit one. It was the exact same part for only £8. I think mercedes were wanting £40. Now, recently my blower motor gave up the ghost so I took it out ( what a job that was ) anyway when I eventually got it out I was surprised to find a very poor quality motor. I called mercedes and yes you guessed, nasty it was but cheap it aint. They wanted £99 + VAT. No way was I paying that as the wifes hairdryer's got a better motor so I went to my local scrapyard and had a look at the commercials. Lo and behold the blower motor on the M.B. 207D van is exactly the same part. The one I got was minted ( plenty length in the brushes ) and only twenty quid. I also replaced the wiper spindles. Now strangely enough they were very cheap from mercedes. Only £23 for the pair, including bushes etc. so as I had all the dash and everything out it was a doddle to replace them. They were badly worn and letting water in, so if you have a lot of water on the floor and puddles in your centre console every time it rains then look to the wiper spindles. My motor is an '85 300 GD with a very rusty back door ( hence my username Rustbucket ) Does anyone know where, apart from mercedes I can purchase a doorskin? I would be most gratefull to anyone who could give me a clue. Look forward to hearing from ya's. Chazz.

Hi Rustbucket,

Without trying to sound repetitive, I would suggest that you join the GWOA. Amongst the numerous services that we provide to our members, we have a parts officers who maintains a database of parts salvaged from GWagens broken. It's only £25 a year and you get a lot for this money.

Download your form from gwagenowners.co.uk and follow the instructions...

Bullfighting

Hope you play fair and don't kick their chuckees 'cause that would shurely bring a bull to his knees ( ooooh!!! ). Have a look and see if there are any half descent rear doors on that database.

Back Door

Hi Rustbucket,

Had the same problem with my back door. Came to the conclusion they are all like that and that the only solution was:
1. Buy a new one off MB (probably cost more than I paid for the G)
2. Dig out the MIG and try to weld in some new metal. (too hard given my welding abilities)
3. Get the angle grinder out, cut out the rot and pop rivet some aluminium checker plate over the gap.

Went for 3 and it actually looks pretty good. Shame Land Rover have now decided to copy me on new Defenders!

Re: Back Door

Hi Russ, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Had thought about what you suggest and I've even got the sheet steel cut but to be honest there's a lot of patching to do and it is also situated around the door handle etc. which is inset so I convinced myself it would be a lot easier with a preformed skin. I think there is too much to replace with alloy chequer plate but I did contemplate forming a skin out of alloy sheet but the inset window put me off. I find now that the least wee thing puts me off and I'm not as keen as I used to be. The welding is no problem as I am a Mechanical maintenance Engineer to trade I just think it would be a lot easier and neater with a skin. I take it it is just the lower 6" or so of your door that is done in chequer? Also I am working outside on the drive ( oh to have a nice big workshop that I could drive the G into and pamper it till my hearts content. ) Anyway thanks for your ideas and happy motoring. Chazz.

Wiper Spindles

Chazz,

What sort of job was it to replace these? I know you had the dash out but do you need to do that to replace just the spindles?

Need to sort mine, or fit a bilge pump!

Cheers,
Russ

Re: Wiper Spindles

Hi Russ, It's hard to believe so much water can get in via the spindles but mine were well worn and the water gathers in the recesses where the spindles sit. It's an easy enough job. Think you will get away with just removing the two small covers that are either side of the steering wheel, the left hand one surrounds the ignition switch. Take the wipers off the spindles and remove the black plastic covers and nuts. Push both spindles inside. From inside the passenger footwell remove the small nut which holds the linkage arm onto the motor ( note the position, mine was horizontal ) and prise it off the shaft with a couple of screwdrivers. This whole assembly should now come towards you ( passenger side ). Take care not to get caught up in any wires when removing / replacing. The only tricky bit for you ( not having the dash removed ) I think will be locating the driver side one but you should see it o.k. with the aforementioned small covers removed. I'll have a look tomorrow 24th to refresh my memory. When I received the parts the black plastic covers were missing from the kit although they were shown in the blown up diagram, so I had to order them separately ( very expensive 25p each ) Ha! Ha! I'll have a look and see if I kept the part numbers. As I say I'll refresh the auld gray matter and get back to you. Take care and cheery for now Chazz.

Re: Wiper Spindles

Russ, I've had a look and it looks quite fidely with everything still in place. You can see the driver side spindle o.k. with the two small covers removed and you will be able to get to it to insert it through the bodywork. Probably just as well to remove the glove compartment as it is only 4 screws. Once the four screws are out you need to disengage the front bottom part by pushing up. This should let you see what you are doing at the wiper motor etc. Here are the part numbers :
A 000 820 44 46 BEARING. ( this is one complete spindle assembly minus capsule )
A 000 820 42 46 BEARING. ( as above but slightly differs in shape )
A 000 824 35 72 CAPSULE ( X2 ). ( black plastic covers ).
I also just remembered having to move one of the snap connecting nipples as it was in the wrong place. Simply had to punch out and and press back in the correct hole. Check the position of yours as it will alter the sroke of the wipers if not in the same hole. I also smeared some clear silicon on the sealing washer etc. Weve had a lot of rain since and not a drop of water to be seen, so I'll cancel the bilge pump order. Cheery the noo, Chazz.

Seating wiper spindles

They are the same as on the 207/307 vans. When I replace them I make a rectangular lead washer with a round hole in it. This makes a great bed for the spindle.

Track rod ends

Hi Rustbucket,
do you know what model ford transit used the tie rod ends your friend obtained for you?
M.B. Australia will only sell the entire assembly (not cheap!!)
I have a brother in the UK who will get them for me, but he needs to know what year of manufacture the transit was, or a ford part number for the item itself.
Cheers,
Red.

Hi Red, the track rod details are as follows. Ford transit RHT ref. DR 2397 from DIRECT COMPONENTS. This is the nearside ( right looking from the front of a right hand drive ) track rod end with 20mm X 1.5mm pitch thread x 70mm thread length. Hope this helps. The other side is crimped in place but if you have the tools and know how you could replace this with the same part. Have fun  Chazz
