Last week my wife smelled a fishy/rotton egg smell which was diagnosed as alternator/battery replacement. All ok for 3 days then within 5 miles of home after 250mile trip same again. Any ideas?, taking it into garage tomorrow but could the alternator be faulty or any other reasons.

so here you are

"""I expect this should be in the electrical section but anyway.I ca'nt understand why an "expensive alternator" is needed to have" wading capabilities".If you are talking about the alternator with the snorkel that is in some Gs,that is.I swapped my alternator for one out of a Saab 900 '84,got an upgrade to 70 amps(from 55 amps) in the process and could have put the snorkel on if wanted ,but I just could'nt see the point, the front of the alt. is open anyway

Sorry ,that was getting away from your problem.
Is'nt the alternator and battery new,(as per diesel forum),does this include the regulator bolted on to the back of the alt. or did they re-use the old one?

baffled

Rog,
I am baffled
Presuming the garage has'nt pulled a fast one on you, then with a new alternator ,battery and regulator I ca'nt see what could be wrong. One possible thing to check is the heavy cable from the alternator is'nt frayed through somewhere, also that main earths are good, this is in desperation though.
Murph had similar problems if you feel like reading more.
I do'nt think much of a garage that just replaces all these things with new parts, especially from MB,as opposed to Bosch from motor factors, alternators if faulty are usually reconditioned at a fraction of new cost, and usually this is'nt even neccessary as a new regulator fixes most problems,25 quid over the motor factor counter.I know this does'nt help now.

I do'nt suppose they could have fitted a 28v unit from a truck application by accident, could they?Bosch alternators are very interchangeable, you know.

Rog, click on the above url to take you to Murph's Battery/Alternator/Regulator/Wiring problems. There are a lot of good points raised especially re Merc Techs.

All Joking aside Rog, you did the right thing. The battery is probably the most dangerous thing on a vehicle. You don't want to be under the bonnet when it is fizzing up as there are a lot of nasty fumes and if the pressure builds up it can explode and you don't want to be anywhere near it when that happens. Hope you get it sorted o.k.
