Hi,

I have taken out my clutch master and slave cylinder and now trying to find replacements for them. No matter where I go no one can seem to find the parts and its always a nightmare find parts for my Gwagon due to it being an import back in about 1991.

Is anyone able to help please?

Its a 280ge W460 1985ish. What other info would you need? the number plate generally brings up nothing helpful on it

Hope someone can help :)

Thanks

Joe

The Chassis or Datacard Serial number beginning WDB460xxxx  is the definitive spec of your G.

Try also G:Wagen at Caversham. They were breaking Gs there.  I am not sure to what extent they are open at the moment tho, or if the following site is current

Hi!

Thanks for the reply :)

I've found out just now that the vehicle had an engine change about 20 years ago. The engine came from one of the Merc saloons or estates my Dad can't remember what one so that has chucked a big spanned in the works

Hi Joe,

You mentioned that the vehicle was an import - is right hand drive or left?

It has had an engine replaced - is that like for like but from a saloon?

Please provide your chassis number, gear box number and if you can, the engine number.

What side is your clutch cylinder at?

Why clutch main and clutch cylinder? The both together rarely go, usually it is the one or the other.

Hi Pistonhead!

Thanks for the reply :)

- Its a left hand drive.

- Apperently the engine was a like for like as far as my dads aware (sorry hes an olden now so hes not 100% sure!)

- Chassis: 46023317035530

Where would i locate the Gearbox and engine number please?

- looking at the vehicle head on bonnet up, the master clutch cylinder is on the right hand side and the slave cylinder is left hand topish of the gearbox

- I'm replacing them both as one of them has gone and to be honest neither have been replaced in 20+ years and both look worse for wear. If i had to guess i would say the slave has gone but in no way am i a mechanic! if its any help Im pretty sure i've managed to source the master cylinder:

Thanks for your help

Hello Joe,

I think this will occupy you for now.

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/clutch-master-cylinder-10161/mercede...

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/slave-cylinder-10160/mercedes-benz/g...

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/repair-kit-clutch-complete-10151/mer...

https://www.euspares.co.uk/parts-catalog/slave-cylinder-10160/mercedes-b...

https://alvadi.ee/en/spare-parts/mercedes-benz/g-class-w460-1979/?nf=1441

From any one of these you will need to establish if the parts are compatible to the LHD.

I shall try to get confirmation from my local dealer, failing that I will make enquiries from Austria.

Do not throw your old kit, there are repair kits availble, repair and sell them on.

Cheers.

Re: Need help on finding replacement Clutch Master and Slave ...

Hey!

Is there anything I can find that would help you? pictures, Number plate etc?

I have found the engine number in the logbook but not 100% sure if its for the original or the replaced one. I will write it below. Is there away i can find the number? I'm more than happy clambering around under it or what ever if need be :)

It's always a nightmare trying to find parts for it. I've looked at the parts list you gave me and pretty sure I have the master cylinder but dont have the slave. On the slave it says either "Lucas 661" or "Lucas 651" (can't quite tell because of rust!)

engine number: 11099410004327

Thank you for your help

Re: Need help on finding replacement Clutch Master and Slave ...
After 31 years the clutch began to fail on my 460. Mostly it was fine but, increasingly, it caused problems of engagement - typically when reversing a trailer up a winding hill. i.e. when working it hard. The ultimate solution was a clutch master cylinder refurbishment kit. When doing the fairly straightforward job I noticed that the old "rubber" seals were so worn that I wondered how they had worked at all. Mercedes engineering can be expensive but it can also be remarkably long lasting... which makes it cheaper in the long run. Apart from the bleeding I have not touched the slave cylinder. I believe (but do NOT guarantee!) that the complete clutch master cylinder P/N: A0012958206 As for the refurbishment kit part number??? I fear that is long gone. Perhaps someone else knows? If I were you I'd be inclined to start with the master and go from there. Good luck with it all.

Re: Need help on finding replacement Clutch Master and Slave ...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure i've found the master cylinder as found a part number etched into it and it looks identical. My master cyclinder actually looks newer than i thought and seals all seem ok. I'm pretty sure its the slave as i took that off and it looks rough, the seals don't look great either. The pedal goes to the floor and there was no fluid in the fluid pot. I topped it up to see if it would disapeard into the foot well but it didn't it just stayed there so i assume that because at the time i didn't release the bleed valve on the slave the fluid wasn't getting down to there to get lost again.

stupid questions is the fluid supposed to come out of the end of the slave cylinder or is it more like a hydralic where you push pedal, pedal sends fluid to move piston type thing?

Thanks for your help though :)

I replaced both on my w463 some time ago, mine is a 3 litre !manual the parts were from a w124, so not expensive, for the w460 you should be using parts from the w123, they shouldn't be too dear either

Re: Need help on finding replacement Clutch Master and Slave ...

Hi!

So i think i've found the one it looks identlical when i recieved it which is good. I have fitted it put am struggling to screen the metal pipe into the top if it. Its driving me nuts!

Is there a trick to this as it grips i turn it with a spanner then it ungrips again (I have turning it then right way...I've double checked the thread)

Any tips for me on this :)

Thanks for all your help

Make sure that you have pulled the flange of the metal pipe back hard against the top of the nut so that all of the threads are making contact with the fitting. The other options are that the threads are stripped or that the threads on your new fitting are different from the nut on your pipe. Try and see if the nut will still fit onto the old fitting to make sure its not damaged.

Hi

Thanks for the reply!

I have a feeling who ever fittedthe old one has slightly rounded the bolt so my spanner isn;t gripping properly which is causing this.

How easy is it to get the pipe out to replace it please?

Kind Regards

Joe

Re: Need help on finding replacement Clutch Master and Slave ...

If you are going to remove the rigid pipe to replace the damaged nut you will have to re-flange the end of the pipe when you fit the new nut. Do you have tools to do that ?  If you think the nut is rounded It might be easier if you use a set of vice grips to tighten the existing nut and then check for leaks, it doesn't need to be gorilla tight !

Here is a schematic of clutch slave and master cylinder for a 463  which i believe is the same for the 460.

Re: Need help on finding replacement Clutch Master and Slave ...

Hi

Thanks for the diagram :)

No i don't i was going to look at a replacement pipe set. I have been advised i could use briaded hydraluic hose and its a more modern solution (we have a hydralic pipe maker near us) can this be done on the gwagens?

thanks for all your help!
