If you are sourcing from Malaysia you could look into a saloon's model water pump it could be the same. Yours would be either an M115 or M201 engine or is it an M102, one of those anyway. From Motor Factors or Mercedes Benz Dealer.

If you are expecting to source from the UK then:

Euro Carparts - https://www.eurocarparts.com/

German & Swedish Factors - https://www.gsfcarparts.com/

Mercedes Benz Parts on line - https://www.mbonlineparts.com/

Parts from here to supply year of manufacture, Engine number, Chassis No, Make and Model Type are useful and practical.

Might the part number embossed on the pump give all the information necessary for a Malaysian motor factor to supply the item?

You could try that but part numbers are not always stampted on parts. I also think the factors would be able to supple given your vehicle details.

Been here and done this twice for a 1988 230GE. After a lot of pain and suffering on both occasions I ended up with an original MB water pump. Expensive but so is the time and trouble trying to fit a pump the will not fit!

From the photograph I think I can see a part number embossed on the old water pump. That might help Mercedes or a  motor factor in Malaysia source a new replacement.

Here's some updates from the links below - First round drew a blank - while Mercedes Benz Parts on line did not go this far back to 1982 on their site, the others had at least the year of manufacture and GSF recognised the vehicle entirely in their system. I have written to both of them - lets see what turns up in the next few days. Thanks again for the lead! Jeff

Take care with Eurocarparts - the two pumps they sent did not fit. The good news is they took them back and refunded my money without any problems.

Thanks for the heads up. Loacted abroad, I can't afford the time and cost to make returns. And it looks like they may not have it either as they have yet to respond. Does anyone else have any other leads please?

Re: Needing a water pump W460 230G (1982)

Hello Jeff

Part No: 1152030073 is for a Thermostat Housing and not the water pump.

My enquiries show that the water pump part number is somewhat A1152000020.

Mercedes will not give me the part number but I am currently waiting a responce from them. Will update when I hear from them. Making phone calls to this dealer is no good they keep you hanging on for a long, long time which costs un-necessary time in call charges: being unemployed it is charges I can ill afford.

Your pump comes in a choice of either three or four mounting bolts, I have seen some illustrations of a similar looking pump with six mounting bolts so this needs a visual confirmation untill the actaul part number can be verified.

Re: Needing a water pump W460 230G (1982)

You are really super while I am really silly - yes its the therostat housing that I am after - no wonder I've been hitting a brick wall. I was wondering what drives it and called my mechanic to confirm. He never said that it was a water pump and it was my assumption with the water hose connecting to it. I seriously feel silly and owe you more than a pint when I visit. Currently a bit out of reach with a very slow internet connection, thus may be a bit slow to respond. Nevertheless,I do appreocate your help with this. Jeff

Try this link:

https://www.albertsoldtimerservice.nl/index.php?main_page=product_info&p...

It is a used Thermostat Housing; notice the pitts in the hose ends, if you go for this one my suggestion would be to fill the holes up with body filler and sand it down to ensure for a leak free fitting. There could be an issue of the item not being able to be sold outside the EU.

Re: Needing a water pump W460 230G (1982)

Thanks again a million times over. I finally recieved it and although there are some pitting, it looks realtively good. Can't wait to get it mounted and have my G on the road again. Probably in sometime in November.
