Hi
I have recently been offered a 280ge petrol auto 7 seater for free. However the car has been sitting for two years and needs a completely new engine, the body work and interior seem fine though other than some rust on the back left wing and a dint in the roof. I need to know how big a job are we talking to get this merc up and running soundly. Can I do it for less than 1500 Quid with a good cheap mechanic.

Any advice would be geatly apreciated
thanks 8)

I would of thought you could get it running for that, based on the fact that you can buy one in perfect working order for £1500. Just need to get yourself an engine from a breakers. You can still buy body new panels for those that need to be replaced - check the G Links section.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this board can chip in?

If that is the case, doesn't it make more sense to buy the good one for £ 1,500 and leave all the work and stress of rebuilding the bad one?

I'd Like to see where you can pick one of these up for £1500? Everywhere i've looked for an equivelent model it has beeen about £2-3000. In addition its a friend of mines fathers and i wouldn't have even thought or looked about having one if it hadn't been for it lying in ruins on his drive and myself joking that i would give a tenner for it.

Try autotrader or eBay. They won't always be available at that price but with a bit of patience you will get one, though the body may be in rough shape.

I have met numerous penniless students, but have yet to meet one who is "clueless", so I guess, deep down, you already know the answer to your own question.

Don't touch it with a bage-pole; you'll be poverty stricken, starving, friendless and deemed the neighbour-from-hell when you start tinkering with it on the pavement outside your digs. You won't even be able to afford a drink for yourself, let alone all your student colleagues who, in complete contradiction, will assume, because you own a "bloody great off-roader", that you must be a rich kid and therefore worth "tapping". You will also have to tolerate snide comments from non-believers about student loans being squandered on a "Mercedes".

How do I know all this? 'Cos forty years ago I did just this, except that it was an ex-army Austin "Champ".....and I was surrounded by non-believers...well there weren't many 4x4 enthusiasts in those days, but people don't change that much.

What the hell, GO FOR IT! ....Be poverty stricken! ......Have fun! (While you can)

Helpful, aren't I?

Soon to be poor

Your right about everything youve said. My head says what the hell are you thinking, but my heart says; sod it be a bit different and laugh at all the doubters as you plow over them in your monster mercedes.
I think if i can get the work done not too expensively I will give it a go, I can always sell it if I'm findidng it too expensive too run and use. Hoe difficult would it be too sell one like that?

You are talking about a fairly rare vehicle. Those who know them want them, and those that don't couldn't give a toss about them. In otherwords it may sell instantly or it may be a while.

Cheers
So if i know where to sell, it might go quickly but as long as it will be able to sell it at some point then i don't mind.
thanks
