Newbie with an oil leak
Good afternoon,
1991 W463 300GE
I have only had my G for one week and I have a very small pool of oil on the driveway.
I would very much appreciate your help in identifying the cause from the pictures I have taken.
The Garage i purchased it from has offered to repair the leak but I would like to know before I take it back exactly what it is to avoid any miss understanding.
Thank you MrB
What is the picture of?
Is is an Automatic?
What colour is the oil? Red / Black
Does it have any smell?
Gav
Looks like the transfer box, but its oil should be gold/yellow in colour- an SAE-80, GL-4, mineral, gear oil. For this you can also use a 75W-85 (semi) synthetic gear oil.
If the oil is red/brown, that might be Dexron -type auto-transmission fluid.. If it's been mis-filled, It would be too thin for the transfer case and the oil and would certainly leak.
in any case check the drain-plug is tight.
lf the oil is correct and the drain plug is tight, then it may be one or more of the drive- shaft seals are leaking. To replace them, the props shafts and drive-shaft flanges will need to be removed, but it is very important to mark their original positions. Refer to service manual.
Actually, after a second look, that side of the transfer box looks very oily with deposits all over. I suspect it may be the output shaft seal. But check also the speedometer-cable drive gear, that is attached to the transfer box, in case it has come loose and is leaking.
Hello Gav,
Sorry mate, it is an Automatic and the colour is Red/Brown and very clean, I presumed it is the transfer box.
I have attached another shot which may help
