Noise behind scuttle - sloshing water?

If I've left the truck out in the rain for a few days there is some noise - maybe sloshing water - on driving off. It might be water draining away.

I did find a damp passenger footwell carpet after the car had been standing a month after xmas (there was water under the carpet on the floors - which are not rusty at all), but I've dried this out with a dehumidifier and it seems to not have returned. I am yet to have my sunroof sorted so this could have been the culprit.

What things should I check before going any further?

Remove the interior mats in the foot-wells, so that they can dry out and also you'll be able to see the route of any further ingress.

Check that the drains in front air-intake scuttle, under the bonnet, are not blocked by leaves/ debris. Gently pour in some water and check that it drains. If not, unblock the drains or water will end up in the cabin.

Open the sunroof and with a jug of water, carefully pour it in each of the two front corners of the frame of the  opening, It should drain from under the car, near each front wing. If the sunroof drain pipes have rusted away, they will allow water to flow on to the headlining and then down the interior A-pillars and end up in the foot wells. The pipes can be repaired but this involves removal of the headlining for access. A new sunroof frame is £1600, so a repair is more economic than replacement of the whole part. As a temporary measure, seal the opening from the outside with electrical tape all the way around.

Check that the wiper-spindle caps are not cracked, and preferably packed with grease, as the shaft of the wiper spindles is another common ingress point for water.

Check that the polythene membrane, which covers the interior of each door cavity, behind each door card, is intact and properly sealed to the metal edges of the door.

Check the windscreen is properly sealed, both the rubber to the frame and the glass to the rubber.

On the wiper spindles - I replaced the steel washers against the body with proper fibre ones (like the ones you use in plumbing) and that helped. You have to take the wiper arms off to do this. I does sound rain related (if it is in the shuttle depending on which version possibly but not sure it has changed) then your wipers spindles would let water into your footwell I think Vs the windscreen skuttle. So might be a bad windscreen seal. My 460 also leaked from the heater matrix... just a bad connection. You can see the jubilee clips behind the plastic shroud.. Best

OK more info.

The noise behind the scuttle isn't water at all - I discovered today it's engine speed related. Only lasts a few seconds when the engine is revved above idle from a very cold start.

Not much to go on but next time I cold start I'll try and remember to open the bonnet and listen from there.

Thats a tricky one without hearing it

Exhaust free from leaks and manifold leaks???

Its not before oil has got to top end is it

Does it do it if you dont rev it for a few seconds. It will be something simple im sure

Doesn't do it at idle. Only notice it when you pull off or rev it. Will get a sound recording with bonnet up.

Could the noise be coming from behind the passenger side front wing?

Has it been serviced recently? Some oils really upset my engine, tapped wise, older oils no problem

I serviced it recently, I used 10W40 fully synthetic oil with the correct Mercedes specification.

Generally runs a lot smoother since I serviced it!
