I'm the proud owner of a 460 series 280GE and not for the first time I've got problems with breaks in the wiring harness where it goes into the rear door! On my vehicle the 'harness' at this point is just a bundle of wires with insulating tape wrapped round that bends (and ultimately cracks) with opening & closing the door. Can someone tell me if the original design was different? I wonder if the cables are supposed to be in a tube or similar that goes in and out of the door-shut in the body, rather than being jammed in the closure as at present??

Chris:

I can confirm that this was the original design on older 460 series G-Wagens. I think it was changed in 1988? when the cables are made to run through the frame into the side of the rear door.

I had the same problems that you describe in my silver G-Wagen until I had my mechanic replace the cables and run them through a hose of slightly smaller diameter than the rubber grommets that surround the cable bundle in both the rear door and the left-rear panel. The result was perfect, since the hose would run through the grommets following the movement of the rear door when opened and closed, preventing the cables from breaking.
