I am humbled and should withdraw my first remark maybe - it is looking good!  Do you want to do my 280 GEL '83 460?  I guess I would need to rob a bank ... and I ask again - does it make economical sense?

Depends on what you want to do with it I suppose... if it is being restored to be sold as a profit making venture, initial thoughts would be 'No Way, Jose' - if however its being built as a one, off, not many around, and I like the fact that 1) One is driving a vehicle that , if your lucky, one may see 2-3 other similar on the road in a month and 2) within the G frat. I have only ever seen maybe two of these, I would say, if money was not an issue - why not go for it?

I know if I won the lottery, a 6x6 would be on the cards... why? Because even though I tend to be one of the only G's that turn up to friends places, picking up kids, parents, etc I personally like the fact that one is in a rare car to begin, having a 'sub level' makes it even rarer!

Fair play, there's a fair amount of work needed there, are those genuine replacement panels? If so can I ask where you're getting them from?

Re: restoration 280ge cabrio too far gone?

local mb dealer to me, far better than the mickey mouse pattern ones, as regards pattern panels they are only in limited lines so we had to bite the bullet for original equipment

Re: restoration 280ge cabrio too far gone?

Cheers for that, thought that might be the case but was hoping you'd found a cheaper source! Do you think the quality of the 'copies' is much different? Or is it the quality and or thickness of the metal that's the problem?

Re: restoration 280ge cabrio too far gone?
i scoured german internet but for the extra few quid to stick with o/e, i did however use some pattern stuff on another g , pattern panels are made of thinner steel and have to be panelled to fit but comes zinc coated. o/e fit straight on

Re: restoration 280ge cabrio too far gone?

Good to meet you at the agm today. Top guy

i think people liked my g

Best comment was all the questions. Then wait for it, there is always one

I dont think any of these  conversions are quite there just yet ????? You have used non mercedes mods.with no intercooler

If you look at mine all important parts are available over the counter and fit straight on. What do i need to proove it

Look at the other in question and its not even close on any score

Mine is silk smooth and does 122 mph and 40 mpg at 60 mph

Im out to prove nothing and i do it for fun, reliability and to be nice to drive with power and economy, if there is such a combination

Please pm me about the merc estate. The more i thought the more it might be good for me

I enjoyed meeting everyone but i had commitments and had to go

Re: restoration 280ge cabrio too far gone?

Oh i dont worry

Any g that benefits from other peoples hard work should be welcomed and included into the g forum. Not bad press lol. I dont care ive just done it in my spare time and its fast and economical and as the engine was made

To have someone say i dont think your conversion is there yet??????. Whats that mean and all about

Yes i have not spent 1000s on all the correct genuine parts but i can make them and its all done by me with a great friend who did the ecu and showed me ignition and steering lock wires. Top guy

It has a crappy temporary k&n filter as im busy and have not got round to it yet and its got no intercooler. It is on my wish list but after 5400 miles i have not got round to it

Wish i had done with our ace off road trip with Kev and Adrian. Some water was deeper than it looked

All is good and we need more meets with just fun outings and bbq. Its difficult as everyone is work work work. Its a way of life
