rev counter

I bought and aftermarket VDO rev counter for my former W460 300 GD and had it fitted to the alternator. Years later I tried to replace it with an original one from a 280 GE but as I suspected it wouldn´t work properly.

If your 300GD has never had a rev counter fitted, surely the only pick-up point is in the alternator, but I don´t exactly know where. Can anybody help?

original 300gd rev counter

A 300gd I am scrapping has a rev counter that I presume is original. It is vdo, has a positive, negative and a green/yellow(I think)pickup wire going to it also a bulb connection. Also there is some sort of amplifier type of thing on the inside wing next to the glowplug relay,it is a black plastic canister about 2 inches diam by 3 inches tall. From this there is a grey screened lead travelling down to a pickup mounted just above the crankshaft front pulley. The mounting bracket for this pickup seems to be fitted to all the om617s so I thought it would be easy to transfer the whole setup to my G,but it has failed to work so far
