Hello,

Forgive my niavity I am a new kid on the block and not sure ho to navigate or operate this site correctly.

I recently purchased my little truck (G Wagon G280 petrol, auto, RHD)

It has a sony stereo fitted within it but it does not power up. no buttons do anything.

Does anyone know a simple reason why this does not function ? Is it a loose connection ? a fuse ? anything else ?

Many many thanks,

Neil.

Re: Stereo not working ?

Hi Neill

Sounds like you have no power to the unit. You'll have to pull the radio unit out of the slot and check you have 12V and earth connection. A multimeter would be useful if you have one.

Assuming everything is connected correctly and still no power - you should now check the radio fuse. There is usually 2 - one inline and another at the vehicle fuse box.

Good luck

D

Re: Stereo not working ?

First, check fuse No.9. This powers both the radio and the cigarette lighter socket. Else just check whether the cigarette lighter socket works when ignition is on.

The main fuse panel is accessed -I think- in the passenger footwell area, lower dash. There is a cover panel with two twist lock fasteners.

Radio and cigarette lighter socket are both Fuse No.9

If this checks out, then extract the radio, as mentioned above, and see whether it has another in-line fuse on its wiring.

See here,

Hi

With Sony and many other newer stereos 12 v is also needed at the yellow wire (memory wire). Also check the blade fuse that is pushed into stereo under the wiring plug.

Best of luck

Re: Stereo not working ?

Wow !

Thank you to all you gents who replied so quickly !

I did find the inline fuse and did change it (it's located on the left hand side of the drivers footwell (RHD) tucked behind the AC ducting.

I have not tried fuse number 9 in the fuse box (This is actually up underneath the steering column)

Sadly my cigarette lighter (located to right of the sony head unit) is stuck in. just flat flush and does not push or pull. (I'd like to remove and get this fitted with a working model also.

Ok I think the Sony head unit is obviously lacking power to it so will need remove and test wires I guess. (I don't have a meter but I do know an electrician and maybe he'll have one ?)

I willkeep ya upto date with my wireless saga !

Re: Stereo not working ?

For automotive use, you can just get a cheap meter like this one from eBay or from your local Maplin

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VC97-3999-AUTO-RANGE-DIGITAL-LCD-VOLTMETER-MUL...

If the cigarette lighter is stuck, then the socket has no power,  Fuse 9 powers both the lighter and the radio. This is the switched, 12V from the ignition.

As mentioned above, some radios also require a permanent 12V for maintaining the pushbutton station memory. This feed may be through the in-line fuse, which you found.

Re: Stereo not working ?

Guys you are all absolutely correct with all comments !

I had an electrician friend give her a peep this morning. He has removed the head unit and there is power to it (metered at 12.7v)

It has 2 power supplies as mentioned by a previous gent. one is a permanent live and yes this has the inline fuse. the other is fed from the cigarette lighter. (which still does not function) but we found a little bulb witha spade end which needs replacing and then the little orange ring around it will illuminate !

Where can I get one of these little bulbs (electricians call them lamps apparently you plant bulbs in your garden) with the flat spade end ? Halfords ? or specialist pull ya pants down n' spank ya lamp dealership? Maybe ebay ?

Anyway it is now apparent that the sony head unit is kaput !!! Knackered, defunct.

I need only buy a new head unit and bob's your uncle !!! So I'm in search of one now.

I have taken a fancy to the ones which are a standard slim size and will fit within the standard apperture using a standard mounting cage and finishing flange. But I like the one where the screen projects from the unit and then flips up ward providing a touch screen which can be a DVD and also a sat nav with bluetooth for phone.

BUT ! (and there's always a but)

Will it project far enough forward to miss the top part of the dash board which projects in front of the recessed apperture ? if you get me ? Do any of you guys have one of these such headunits fitted within an 86 model ? does it propel and lift up without clashing with the top line of the dash ?

Cheers !!!
