Tires for a 2011 G350 18 inch alloys
Hi
I have just purchase another G. This one a 2011 350G running 18 inch wheels. The tires currently are 265/65 r18 and I would like ot go bigger, but have been told that cannot from multiple tire dealers. They tell me that it will mess the gearing up. My old G ran a 15 inch rim with 31/10.5 r15 tires. These are bigger. Why did Mercedes opt for smaller tires on the newer ones?
You assisstance would be most appreciated.
Barry
Hi Barry (sharon), (sorry you had multi-posting issues - its a quirk of the site intereface!)
Congrats on your G. I have just got the same (G350) and love it.
I was impressed by how 'large' the wheels and tyres are (I think I have the same as you, R18). My older 460 is (I think) on R16 wheels.
So...I assume you mean putting even bigger 'wheels' on? Can you even get R19+ ? Or put R18 knarly tyres on the R18 rims. The effect at the speedo would be nominal.
Interested to see what others have to say are the options.
I can get that changed (to Barry) if you would like.
Also not sure I understand what you would do with tyres? You cannot put R15 tyres onto R18 rims. All you can choose is 'wider' or deeper profile. So R18 265/75 or or R18 275/xx
That's my understanding anyway. What am I missing.
The tyre sizes for the different G models have the same circumference: for example 265/ 60 R18 = 265/ 70 R16. You can fit larger tyres but you have to adjust the settings both for the instrument cluster and transmission module. The reason: the ESP tolerates a deviance in the tyre circumference of about 2%. The difference between 265/60R18 (2367 mm) tires and the popular upgrade 275/70R18 (2590 mm) is about 10%. Without adjustment the ESP will interfere in faster turns. There are a number pre-programmed tyre sizes in the G-electronics (and that varies depending on model year), it has been disucssed on this forum before (and there is more if you google it).
top left corner, seventh items under you name: "Search Website". If you find somebody who is able to adjust the settings succesfully, please tell us.

It's a pity that the later 463 G's can't run on larger tyres than stock without causing issues with the ESP and ETC systems. Although there does seem to be a simple fix involving adjusting the tyre size settings to corespond with the new tyre size through the STARR diagnostic system as mentioned by Theo.
There are reports on some of the forums that owners have fitted 285x65x18 tyres without any adverse effects perhaps because it is only a 3% difference in circumfrence.
On my pre ESP/ETC 463 I was able to fit BFG 325x60x15 tyres with no issues (well maybe a little rubbing on full lock).
Waiting to hear. Several other threads about rear mudflaps on GWOA. Here is the fitting and part numbers etc.
Looks good Big Block. Like your photograph. Nice colour! Where are you located in the Highlands. I am in Aberdeenshire. I am now looking for some mud flaps for the back. I understand that you cannot use front ones with running boards. Barry
Hi Barry
I am located in Strathspey on the other side of the Cairngorms from you.
I think John is trying to locate some rear mudflaps for you from our old GWOA stock.
There are aftermarket front mudflaps that fit onto the ends of the sidesteps but not OEM ones. I think Mercedes idea was that the sidesteps would stop the spray from the front wheels.
In case it helps, I fitted front mudguards to my 1994 300 SWB. They really make a difference. No more fan shaped mud stripes across the doors after driving in rain/mud.
I got them from MB dealer in January 2017 so I don't know if they still makke them. The part numbers were:
MA463 880 03 22 (Splash Guard LHF) £35.60 plus VAT
MA463 880 04 22 (Splash Guard RHF) £35.60 plus VAT
MA463 880 00 93 (Clip) x 2 £26.62 plus VAT each
On the same invoice is MA463 880 00 93 but that might have been for something else.
Mine already had rears fitted.
Yes we have a few left. They are plain, ribbed, rubber (no logos etc).
I checked my G350 (no flaps) and it would need you to purchase the MB brackets for a 463.... in the doc above. You can have the flaps for 'free' assuming you join up to GWOA :) Let me know and PM an address if so.
Don't forget to double check the part numbers then.
Those numbers I gave were for when I purchased mudguards for the front.
While you are waiting for the flaps, I checked the rear of my G350 and the flap brackets seem to be there. It looks like a handful of M8 nuts and bolts (and washers) would secure flaps in place, if you drill the holes in the rubber flaps.
Not sure where it might go on the front which would be more useful.
Did you get them fitted, and pictured?
Interested for a friend... :)
Thanks JDring. Yes, I am quite excited. I have got it yet, but know it has some brand new Bridgestone Duellers on it that I am going change out and sell for BF Goodrich All Terrain. I have had two sets of these and love them. The tires are bigger on my G Wagon even though the rims are 15 inch. I find it kind of odd that Mercedes are putting on the smaller tire. Maybe it is about fuel consumption. The tires for the 18 inch are a heck of a lot more that the ones for the 15 inch. I find that odd also.
it is Barry by the way. Tried to get it changed from Sharon, but this never happend. I used my wifes debit card and the name Sharon stick with the subscription.
