Considering W463's went from relatively gutless (M103) to quite powerful (G63 before 463a), I'm assuming they upgraded the transfer case and locking differentials to handle this new found power along the line. Does anyone know about this and with which models they upgraded?

Re: Transfer case and differential strength

Good question.

There is a thread on TC replacement here: http://gwoa.co.uk/content/463-transfer-box-issue-750653

Gav has access/knowledge.  Seems to me that the Case/external flanges are the same but with different components inside as it evolved over time. No major re-design it would seem.

Electronic selection came in 2001.

I think they must be pretty tough and compact, because I don't recall any recurring problems with them on any model since 2001.

Here's a pre-2001 one

Interesting, thanks for that. One imagines they must have beefed them up internally to take all the extra torque.
