I'm struggling to find rear brake parts, anyone know where I can get the following, rear shoes, two hand brake cables, two wheel cylinders, & a fitting kit. Normally when I'm stuck it's back to Bells of Coldstream, but they are closed too. Any ideas or suggestions?

For your brake shoes, fitting kit and wheel cylinders try: https://www.brakesint.co.uk/

Hand brake cable is dealer part only; I am expecting that the dealer don't do it any more or they are currently closed.  The cable may be got from S-Tec.

Re: W463 rear brakes

Hi - unlikely to be of any use, but I ordered a pair earlier this year. Didn't fit my 460 (d'oh!),  if anyone interested/needing, happy to ship on.

Maxgear 19-0303  - apparently fit the following... (although not promising!)

  • MERCEDES-BENZ G-Class Off-Road (W460) (Year of Construction 03.1979 - 07.1993, 72 - 156 PS, Diesel, Petrol)
  • MERCEDES-BENZ G-Class Off-Road (W461) (Year of Construction 09.1989 - ..., 92 - 184 PS, Diesel, Petrol)
  • MERCEDES-BENZ G-Class Off-Road (W463) (Year of Construction 09.1989 - ..., 94 - 422 PS, Diesel, Petrol)
  • MERCEDES-BENZ G-Class Off-Road Cabrio (W463) (Year of Construction 09.1989 - ..., 113 - 224 PS, Diesel, Petrol)

Re: W463 rear brakes

I have used a local Factor to reline the shoes - try that for your area.

Re: W463 rear brakes

I have had a reply from my local Main dealer with a price for all the parts, minus 1 hand brake cable

So for a set of shoes, 2 wheel cylinders, 1 hand brake cable & a fitting kit

£731.78 Inc VAT

Re: W463 rear brakes

About £300 would be a surcharge on the brake shoes which you should get back on their return.

Re: W463 rear brakes

That's interesting as I believe lining should be less than £50 or that's the quote I've had

Re: W463 rear brakes

You can get replacement linings from MB, for not much money, comes with rivets etc, then find somewhere that does re lining, classic motorbike mag usually has adverts .

In the old days MB would reline your shoes,  but not any longer,  you may as well renew drums as well?

To complicate matters, I think linings in different sizes, to compensate for wear on drums, same brakes are used on commercial stuff, only the handbrake cable exclusive to main dealers.

Fitting kit was very good value, but prices were about 8 years ago

Re: W463 rear brakes

Still no progress as the local Main dealer isn't open yet, looks like there is a fuel leak too & a need to replace fuel lines, does anyone know if the stainless steel strap the club were selling a few years back are available?

GWOA doesn't have any of those stainless steel straps left. Just some mudflaps, apparently.

Re: W463 rear brakes

I think the ones on the car are ok but the mechanic is overly pessimistic, prob because it's an unusual car for him to work on

Re: W463 rear brakes

At last some news, moved the G to a different Garage, the fuel leak has been sorted, and the locked up rear brakes on both sides are due to seized & leaking wheel cylinders, these need replacing along with the hand brake cables but the wear on the shoes & drums is negligible. Will report on progress after these parts arrive

Re: W463 rear brakes

Only 1 brake cable needed in the end but brake pipes failed on both sides in the process and have needed replacing, changing the rear dampers also a struggle as they need heat to free up, other jobs to do include one of the dual horns a tail light, wiper blades & a new front number plate. Getting there...slowly

Re: W463 rear brakes

Interested to know what the fuel leak problem was?  The brakes work is well worth sorting.  Drum brakes always have those niggly leaks and seizures.  The rest is just minor (but time consuming) fixes.

Damage pipe, rusted on a part of the pipework that hadn't been waxoyled, cut out & replaced with rubber petrol hose.

Re: W463 rear brakes

You are right might be better to strip out the whole fuel pipe but the rust really is localised
