Hi. I am about to collect a 1985 LWB diesel 461. It has the original steel wheels. I quite like the alloy wheels that are on some of the posher models, but can anybody tell me how easy it is to get non Merc alloy wheels for a 461? Thanks, Rob

Welcome erth visitor.
Ebay regularly has G wagen wheels for sale. Just put in a search for G Wagen as well as G Wagon and save it to favourites It will send to you email next time a set gets offered. Other than that put a post in parts wanted in this forum and even better still join the GWOA club there will be wheels offered sooner or later.
Unfortunately the wheel stud pattern is not one that alot of suppliers of alloy wheels will stock but try http://www.4x4accessoriesandtyres.com/index.html

Adapters

Not sure if it's possible there, but I ran adapters to convert to a more standard wheel pattern (5x5.5") which was nice, but a little expensive.

Yes Golly it is possible, there is a company in UK making wheel spacers who MAY be able to change the pattern of the studs, they advertise in 4x4 mag every Month

Stud adapters

Wouldn't using stud adapters put more pressure on the wheel bearings? I was hoping, probably optimistically, that there must be some other vehicle with bigger wheels which uses the Gwagen stud pattern?

Unfortunately the stud pattern of the G-Wagen is quite rare, In fact I believe that the only vehicle that shares it is its cousin the Pinzgauer.

It's not only vested interest but I would insist that you join the GWOA. There are loads of 460 series stuff for sale in the club's magazine and we have a parts officer who has the contacts for sourcing wheels and a thousand other parts for older G-Wagens.

Jesus,

Many thanks for that - I am actually already a member of GWOA.

I have seen some suitable alloys in the club mag, but wondered whether I had any other options.

Regards

Rob

Sorry Rob but I assumed that you weren't given the fact that you haven't been included in the GWOA Members group.

Contact the forum administrators to gain access privileges to the "members only" section of the forum where you'll have access to things that you cannot see know.

Cheers,

Also custom steel

It's also very easy (here) to take a set of old steel wheels and have the centers cut out and selded into another wheel body. This is noce because you can choose the width and backspacing for a real custom result. Heck you can even convert to beadlocks!

Peter,

Thanks for that - very helpful.

Would you know what these wheels are called so I can find them on the Compomotive website?

Best wishes

Rob
