Am going to look at this 280GE at the weekend, have sent the AA to give it the once over and so on any views are welcome, not sure if the "Price is Right" been sent some in depth photos and the drivers seat is as expected, and the tread looks a bit thin on the wheels, odd spot of rust on the back door, no leccie windows just locking.

all views needed.

cheers

In my opinion, you should not pay more than 3k for it for that year.

Thanks for the reply Peter, because i'm new to this scene it's hard for me to get an honest view / price guide on anything, i've been looking for a G for about 4-5 months and can't seem to find a decent price guide, if you look on autotrader there's old X reg's going for £3000+ so i find it very hard to work out what is a fair price. I have about £5000 now and want to know how high up the G ladder that will get me.......

Unless that G is near perfect its too much money.

For what it’s worth my opinion is that for around £5K you need to move away from the mind set of getting hung up on mileage and age.

History and condition are all that’s important. One with 200+ K miles but with a comprehensive history and well cared for is going to be better than a neglected low mileage and younger truck every time.

If fuel economy is not an issue petrol G’s are way cheaper. Both the 280 and 300 petrol engines have a very good reputation for longevity. Just consider how much petrol say £1000 will buy you if you have saved that on the purchase price. (or even worse pay +£1K and then end up paying another £2k on a retro fit turbo)

cheers Russ, will be doing about 25miles a day (5 days aweek) 90% road use a little "muddy shoe action" so thought a petrol model would be OK.....

(Don't tell me to get a fiat panda 4x4 )

Steve, I would say that one is priced about £1000 over what it is worth. I sold my D-reg 280GE lwb auto last year for £2200. I had had it for 7 years, so it had loads of history and was in pretty reasonable, but not immaculate, condition. I would have loved to have got more for it, but nobody really wants big petrol 4x4's. Can you live with 12mpg around town and 15-17mpg on a longer run? Having said that they are a real hoot to drive and the engine sounds meatier than it really is.

i'm using on mainly A roads so constant 50ish MPH, once it gets up to that speed, minimal town use. would the black smokey stuff be better than petrol then :?

I agree in that that one is overpriced...

I sold my 460 300 GD for 3 grand in November and I doubt that there were many around better than it.....for five grand you should get one of the best 460s in the country.

Even if you don't plan to drive many miles if you were buying a diesel you would save a third in running costs and for the limit you have set yourself you can find very good diesels.

If we assume that the cash you save if you buy a 280GE as opposed to a 300GD in the same condition is £ 1,000 and we assume that the average consumption of the 280GE is 15.7 mpg (18 litres per 100 Km) and that of the 300GD is 21.7 mpg (13 litres per 100 Km), you can save, by buying the diesel, 5 litres of fuel per 100 Km, or roughly £ 4.

Since the difference in price is £1,000 (250 times the saving per 100 Km), you will not recover the difference through savings in fuel until you reach 25,000 Km (250 times 100 kms) or 15,500 miles.

Since you expect to drive 6,500 a year, you will need 2 years, 4 months and 20 days to cover the difference in purchase price. From then on you'll enjoy a 33% net saving on running cost. And the resale value will be better for the diesel.

But don't expect performance from the 300GD....

(GULP) Well it may well be the black stuff then, i don't tend to change cars that much and will no doubt keep hold of the G for along time.(current car 15years and counting)
if £5000 buys me one of the best 460's in the country can i get an OK 463 for this amount? Always thought a 463 was outta my budget.

Cheers for all your help guys.

Am I missing something here? Didn't think buying a G was about saving money!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 grand should get you a nice 1 owner, full history, low milage diesel VW polo. 64 bhp........zero to sixty sometime maybe.

Go on get a cheap 280 or 463 300 and LPG it if you are that bothered.

Good point, kick me back on track!! bottom line is just been given a nice promotion at work and end up with a decent amount of spare change at the end of the month and can now get the motor i always wanted a G WAGON (and these seem to love eating spare change). Just don't know the in's and outs of the wonderful world of G's. The cost of "squirt" isn't the be all and end all of it, what i want is value for money.

mmmmmmm Polo i'll stick to my battered '88 'bishi van with 193k on the clock......

I would of thought you could definitely get a 463 for that much with a bit of patience. I've seen some in very good shape for about £6K so imagine you could get one for cheaper. Though you will probably end up with a white one....

But the key word here is patience and being willing to go to the ends of the country to get it.

Where am I? Oh I'm over here now...

yeah i'm willing to wait for the right car, but this money has burnt it's way through sooo many pockets i'll end up spending it on new trousers!!!

So i guess the hunt continues.

I would imagine that £ 6,000 is rock bottom for a 463 today, unless you find somebody in "dire straits" needing the cash.

This one went quite nicely for £ 6,995:

Well come on give us a laugh, what did they say? Is there enough room on this forum?

I'm pretty confident that after they have looked over a car of that age no one would touch it!

I have so little free time that i had to send some one to look at it as it's quite away for me to travel and working 13 hours aday 6 days a week does have it's draw backs !! So i let "the 4th emergency service " take a look, but i guess there still looking (or scratching their ars erm sorry i mean heads)......
