Hi all.

We have a 1992 300GEL Auto which has developed a gearbox issue. Forward gears appear to be OK but if we select reverse in either hi or low range the vehicle does not move. Our local garage who does the usual service and mot works have suggested it needs a G-Wagon gearbox speciailst, so we are wondering if anyone can recommend anyone.

Many thanks.

Call HA Lock in Rushden, ask for Paul Webb. He has looked after my cars for years. Including a 126, a 163, a CLK55, an SL60 and my 463. Paul has a G and did a lot of sorting out in mine. Highly recommended.

My sources say that, you are looking at gearbox rebuild. I have a cousin in this trade but sad to say I am not confident to suggest him as a service provider and not in your area.

You have an automatic specialist in Northampton:

I have had no dealings with them nor know of their reputation, please make your own choice and get quotes from several sources. There are gearbox reconditioners about both here and in Europe if need be.

I think most repairs are charging around the £1300 mark plus removal and refit of gearbox. Personally, my suggestion is to opt for a remanufactured gear box rather than a reconditioned box and requires a good study on what is and should be replaced.

I would check the basics first..... Is the linkage adjusted correctly and actually selecting reverse at the gearbox end? Check the linkage bushes. Change the oil and filter/check the oil level. If it still doesn't work after those often basic fixes, then worry about maybe having to repair it. PS, the high low selection on the transfer box does not affect the gearbox in any way.
