300GD auto gearbox.
Hi all, my 1989 300GD has a very full and comprehensive service history however there is no mention of gearbox service or oil change, is it a maintenance free part ? or should I consider an oil change on the next service? Gear change is a little slow when cold but very smooth after a short drive, thanks
Gearbox oil and filter renewal were schduled for change every 36,000 miles. Be sure to drain the torque convertor by its own drain plug.
its colour should tell you if its been done recently, auto box fluid is a red colour, if its brown it needs changing
Thanks Rakish, if it has been done should it be documented ?
If you still have the service book; yes it should be documented to indicate that part of the service schedule has been conducted.
Alternatively, start your own booklet to log elements of work or service you have conducted.
Recording service work does help provide history to the vehicle and in some cases having a full service history can allow for a higher selling price. Other than that it gives you a personal record on what had been done and when.
Like Rakesh stated earlier on..
It is part of the service schedule at 36k, 72k, 108k etc and if these have been done at MB then it will have had oil and filter change.
Its not an extra like brake fluid and coolant that is done on a date schedule , so there will be no special mention
cheers
