32 years old - amazing
My 240GD is now 32 years old and I am constantly amazed by the quality of the parts used. When I bought it nearly 4 years ago it had sat in the garage of the only other owner for a couple of years - I towed it home, put a new battery on and some tyres and it passed it's mot. So it's been used pretty much as I bought it ever since, though not much offroad, only easy trails etc and lots of road miles in the past year especially.
Over the past month or so I have started to show it a little love and it has rewarded me graciously.
The original owner lived by the sea in Suffolk and the salt atmosphere has taken it's toll of the rear body work but the front end is like new with a little Tcut.
When I collected the car the seller confessed he had never used the diff locks and indeed they were solid - no movment from the levers whatsoever and I havn't had the time or fortitude to tackle the job untill now!!!!
I pulled everything off without any damage at all - not a single bolt or bleed nipple had any corossion but there was no movement on any cylinders - so I sprayed a little penetrating oil where ever I could and waited an hour - After cleaning, reassembly and fresh brake fluid everything works - even the lights on the dash!!!
So thankyou Steyr Daimler Puch - you made a good job.
Good stuff Chris
allways been a fan of that one

Fantastic Chris
Very nice. 32 years old... does that make it the oldest G in the UK? You going to bring it down to the AGM next week?
Me thinks a little letter to MB, get some nice publicity and maybe a free service or maybe even a new G??? lol

Baah, MB can keep their new G's. Your little 240 is quality, thats not even available on the option list now. :-)
Hi
I remember all the doubts you had when you went to look at it ...it was a good find after all
after owning my fair share of G's over the years , i must say that you have one of the best G's one could ever wish for chris.

Thanks all, I know I'm preaching to the converted anyway.
Is it the oldes? - I think so but there could be a few that were war booty made before mine. The first owner bought it new from Belgium and imported it to the uk in 1980 which is why it is a 'Y' registration. It was made in July or August 1979, within the first 6 months of production - number 2939 off the line..
I am hoping to get to the AGM but there are a few things in the way at the moment - however these would deffinately be overcome for a new G rfom Merc - Desert sand colour please.
PS not sure I would trust them to service mine though
