Hi ,
i' making the final decision between a second hand recent g class ( 2010)
I know quite well differences on engine, performance and fuel consumption.
is not clear if ther iare some differemces on suspension, brake set up of the car in general ecc ,
i mean , apart from performance, there are differences in aspects like : handling , road attitude, confort , steering quality Braking efficency ?
at higway soeed ( 140 kmh ) the cdi is alot mor noisy than the 500 ?
thanks an excuse for my english..

Re: 350cdi and 500

Lorenzo, its simple really, can you afford to drive a G wagen that does an average of 15MPG, if so V8 all day long, if you are watching your pennies, you know the sort of pennies you watch when deciding between spending circa £50k or £80K, then go for a diesel !.

I mean, how long will it take you to waste £30k on petrol over diesel, ill do the costings for you

350 @ 25MPG over 50,000 miles =2000 gallons @ £6.59 a gallon = £13,183.4
500 @ 15mph over 50,000 miles = 3333 gallons @ £6.27 a gallon = £20,897.9

so the difference is £7000, £30K divide by £7k eqautes to 4.28, you would need to do over 200,000 miles to in the V8 to waste the extra £30k you sepnt on the G350.

**price for fuel is at today costs**
as for diffencre go for a drive in both, and youll spend your money on the v8, if you got any sense. Diesel, devils fuel.

Re: 350cdi and 500

Thank , as told fuel consumption is quite clear for me
, not understand why you speak about 30.000£ more fore the diesel over the v8 here in italy is the opposite the new 500 is like 20.000€ more than 350 .
I agree the v8 is "the engine" and it was my first idea ( i do like 15.000 km per year ) the fact is
quite impossible to find fresh used cars here. ( i mean with like 2 year max ) so the alternative is the 100% new but on one side is more tha 110.000€ and also a waiting time of about 6 months

I found a 2010 350 11.000km at 70.000€ coming from mercedes benz oficial dealer with 2 year "first hand" warranty.... So i was looking to find if there are difference i still dont know between the two model
Suspension, brake, set up...

Lorenzo,

Mr perfect does raise a good point with regard to the fuel consumption. However...

other benefits you may wish to consider....

The MB V8 is a robust block and so long as you have it serviced will go on forever
The V8 sound, more growl, less agricultural/commercial.
The kick down in a V8 sounds great and the power is genuinely effortless
If you decide to take it off road, loads of power and surprisingly very controllable
If , like me you have kids, you may want to consider letting them experience a V8 before they are consigned to history by the eco fundamentalists.

I have had my 2001 V8 for over 4 years, and despite mr perfect reminding me that I could have run a small country on the money I spent in fuel, It puts a smile on my and my families face when we go out in it. Is the 500 your talking about the new 5.5ltr? if so with road going tyres you may get around the 15MPG - though when I had road going tyres I was getting between 17-19MPG. The road set up, for a G, is very good, slightly less roll, bigger disks pads and a few more goodies - V8 badge, blue entry door strip, V8 badges etc.

If all you are doing is 15K per year I would recommend letting the heart rule the head and go for a V8

Re: 350cdi and 500

I'm pretty certain they are the same, only difference being 350CDI will come standard with 16" wheels while 500 comes standard with 18" wheels which has some effect on handling. Seem like many 350's are specced the 18" wheel option though.
500 has more things as standard, but not items that effect handling , road attitude, comfort , steering quality braking efficiency.
I doubt that at 140 kmh there will be any difference in noise either, thats a very relaxed cruising speed for both, even in older 463's the sound proofing deals with engine noise and it's wind noise that takes over at speed.

Re: 350cdi and 500

My reply was based on a used g500 for around £50k against a new g350 at £80k, difference £30k if you buy a new 350 as opposed to a used 500

Thanks.. I agree v8 is a different things, !!! the other day i drove fore some km a ml 500 withe the new 388cv ,,really a great engine
But for the g i was considering : econimical aspect, diffucult on find recent v8 ( i was loking for this since 9 months) , and also the fact the car is not made to race on road !! so maybe the 350 is enough for the way the car is built

Re: 350cdi and 500

How hard would it be importing from Germany? Not that G's are cheaper there, it's just there will be a lot more to choose from. Many in the UK have imported from Germany and it's an easy process although we have to make a few changes just because we drive on the left, other then that, being in the EC it's just filling in a few bits of paper.

Re: 350cdi and 500

If you compare the current models, buy the G500.  There is no difference in terms of brakes or wind noise and on the same wheels/ tyres the handling will the same, but as Spyder already pointed out the G350 feels agricultural in comparison to the G500.  There is another important point to consider if you compare the current models: it is likely that the 5.5l V8 will be replaced by a 4.6l bi-turbo  engine with all kind of attached gimmicks for the 2012/13 model year. Not the type of engine you would expect in a G which should be good news for the value of the current G500 in the years to come.  The G350 is expected to receive a power boost from 210hp to 265hp which should reduce the desirability and resale value of the current diesel model.
